The Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity, located at Stella Niagara near Lewiston, along with students of the Stella Niagara Education Park (SNEP), are celebrating Peace Week with a variety of activities.

Peace Week coincide with the Oct. 4 Feast of St. Francis. Weeklong festivities include the students’ “Walk for Peace, held Oct. 3 (pictured), and a tree planting ceremony at 2 p.m. Oct. 8.

A Linden tree was chosen because it’s ideal for the soil and conditions at Stella Niagara.

Sister Teresa Miklitsch, OSF, a member of the Provincial leadership team, explained, “This particular species of tree has a beautiful broad canopy, good color in the autumn, and a spring flower. Most importantly, it’s ‘huggable’ for the children of SNEP’s outdoor education program. It will be a lasting tribute to our sisters’ legacy to the students, community and to Mother Earth.”

The tree symbolically represents the sisters’ care for creation. They have paid close attention to the environment and have taken great care in managing the grounds at Stella Niagara where they have resided since 1908. For more than a century, they have committed themselves to human rights, ecological harmony and global peace.

Although known for teaching, the Sisters of St. Francis applied their gifts and talents to ministry in parishes, social work, and spiritual direction. They've served this community through prison ministry, food banks and homeless shelters; established Rosary Hill College (now Daemen University); designated their property in Lewiston as a national peace site; and worked with Western New York Land Conservancy to establish the Stella Niagara Preserve along the banks of the Niagara.
