As is tradition, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, Veterans Day was observed with a ceremony at Lewiston’s Academy Park. The event, set at the “Circle of Honor,” was coordinated by Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487. Vietnam veteran and Lewiston historian Timothy Henderson served as the keynote speaker.
The U.S. Department of Foreign Affairs notes, “Veterans Day is always observed officially on Nov. 11, regardless of the day of the week on which it falls. …
Veterans Day is the day set aside to thank and honor ALL those who served honorably in the military – in wartime or peacetime. In fact, Veterans Day is largely intended to thank LIVING veterans for their service, to acknowledge that their contributions to our national security are appreciated, and to underscore the fact that all those who served – not only those who died – have sacrificed and done their duty.”
In Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump said, “The story of America is written with the courage, honor, and dedicated service of our veterans. Through their sacrifice, the fires of freedom burn brightly, our republic secured, and our way of life made possible. For nearly 250 years, their unyielding spirit has carried our nation through every trial and triumph, ensuring that liberty endures for all time. This Veterans Day, we show our gratitude and recommit to honor their service, uphold their legacy, and give every veteran the loyalty, respect, and support they have earned and so dearly deserve.”

The Hon. Michael Roemer served as master of ceremonies for the Veterans Day program.

Fourth and fifth grade service learning students from the Lewiston-Porter Intermediate Education Center honored local veterans during the “Field of Flags” Veterans Day ceremony held at Academy Park on Nov. 7. The students marked the occasion by planting American flags, singing patriotic songs, and taking part in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
As part of their service efforts, the students also organized a donation drive at their school, raising more than $1,300 for the Disabled American Veterans organization.
