The City of North Tonawanda, in partnership with the North Tonawanda City School District, is launching a new pilot initiative this winter aimed at assisting residents who are unable to clear their sidewalks due to physical limitations, age, or scheduling constraints.

In response to concerns from residents regarding sidewalk snow removal, Mayor Austin Tylec reached out to North Tonawanda City School District Superintendent Dr. Jeffrey Jachlewski to explore a collaborative solution that would both support residents and provide meaningful opportunities for students. The result is a volunteer-based program connecting students who need community service hours for graduation with residents who require assistance clearing sidewalks and areas around fire hydrants.

Following a districtwide survey conducted by the superintendent, more than 100 students expressed interest in participating in the program.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our students to give back to their community while earning some of the hours needed to meet the community fulfilling their graduation requirements,” Jachlewski said.

Residents who are physically unable to shovel their sidewalks or clear snow around fire hydrants may register their property for volunteer assistance at the following links: https://forms.gle/jCqFR6kELFkjTb2V7 or www.NorthTonawanda.gov/Mayor

Tylec emphasized the program reflects the city’s ongoing commitment to creative partnerships and solutions.

“This initiative is one of many partnerships we continue to build with our School District,” he said. “We understand that, for some residents, clearing sidewalks after heavy snowfall can be difficult or even impossible. Rather than immediately turning to enforcement and fines, we are working to create community-driven solutions that help residents maintain their sidewalks in a safe, clear and accessible condition, as per city ordinance”

The program is being introduced as a pilot initiative for the season. While student interest has been strong, the city and School District cannot guarantee that every request will be fulfilled. The city and School District will evaluate participation and effectiveness as the program progresses.

The city reminds residents that maintaining clear sidewalks remains the responsibility of property owners under local ordinance, and this program is intended to assist those who are truly unable to meet that obligation.
