Niagara University folklorist Edward Yong Jun Millar recently received an Archie Green Fellowship from the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress to document and preserve the stories, experiences, knowledge and traditions of workers involved with the Ransomville Speedway. His is one of only seven projects in 2020 to have been awarded this competitive annual national fellowship.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Thursday announced over $17 million from the Lake Ontario Business Resiliency Program has been awarded to more than 140 businesses in shoreline communities to assist with restoration and resiliency efforts from prior flooding events, and to strengthen businesses against future flooding.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Monday announced a Friday deadline for school districts that have not submitted plans for in-person learning. His office claimed 107 school districts had not submitted a plan for in-person learning. Districts that fail to meet the Friday deadline will be unable to provide in-person learning this year.

Acclaimed musical ensemble Alarm Will Sound performed the Western New York premiere of "Ten Thousand Birds" by John Luther Adams at Artpark on Sunday. Daughters of Charity Ministries Inc., through its mission and ministry impact program, has awarded Mount St. Mary's Neighborhood Health Center $20,000 to provide free COVID-19 antibody testing at the center, located at 3101 Ninth St., Niagara Falls.

The Lewiston Lions understands local food pantries are under tremendous pressure, with increased demand and decreased donations. The club was able to make donations to several food pantry locations during quarantine: Care-N-Share (Inter Community Services), Word of Life Ministries and the Magdalene Project. In addition to a monetary donation, 40 face masks were also donated to the Word of Life Ministries for distribution to those who may need one.

Catholic Health announced Laurie Merletti, MSHA, FACHE, was named president of physician enterprise. Most recently, she served as vice president of physician integration and practice management for the health system. In this expanded role, she will provide executive oversight of Trinity Medical WNY as well as Catholic Health's primary care centers and hospital-sponsored physician practices in Erie and Niagara counties.

At issue here is concern over a site plan application submitted by Niagara Properties - EnSol Inc. - of Niagara Falls. The company has been working with the town's Planning Board and Environmental Commission over past months and wishes to create a soil recycling center and composting facility on some 10 acres of land it owns on the north side of the 1100 block of Pletcher Road.

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston donated 50 backpacks (full of school supplies), and other personal items, to the Magdalene Project of Niagara Falls this past week. The donation is part of the Kiwanis New York District's First Lady's Project for 2019-20, which is to help homeless or less-fortunate students in local communities.

Over the last 15 years, the major fundraiser for the Historical Association of Lewiston has been the annual Tour of Homes run concurrently with the Lewiston Christmas Walk in December. This year, that tradition regrettably is suspended.
