Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center has updated its schedule for performing community diagnostic testing for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. The schedule, effective immediately, was revised to better reflect public demand for this testing.

In placing the highest priority on the health and safety of the community, Niagara Hospice is adapting its annual special events schedule into virtual events for the remainder of 2020. The organization's special events department has developed alternative activities, including trivia night and paint kits, and virtual versions of the Hospice Gran Fondo bike ride and Mighty Niagara Half Marathon & Hospice Dash 5K, to engage with supporters of all ages and interests.

Whether it be behind masks, screens or phones, the legislature has reconvened in Albany, focused and motivated. The coronavirus epidemic has put a tremendous strain on our communities, our livelihoods, and the very things that make us human. Interactions at work, in social settings, or in passing have ceased to brief greetings and informal salutations. The legislature returns this week frustrated but with a heavy heart, knowing the pain, suffering, stress and anxiety the members of our community have faced over the last few incredibly trying months.

As part of her capstone course, projects in public health, Niagara University senior Joy O'Brien decided to install Little Free Libraries throughout the City of Niagara Falls to increase and promote children's literacy. Working with her course professor, Dr. Mark Gallo, and their community partner, Brian Archie from Create a Healthier Niagara Falls Collaborative, O'Brien was well on her way to construct six libraries, which serve as neighborhood book exchanges and operate on a "take a book, leave a book" basis.

Congressman Brian Higgins and Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski announced the accreditation of Jeffrey M. Glatz, director of the Niagara County Veterans Service Agency. As a fully accredited representative of the American Legion, he can now work on the preparation and presentation of claims for veteran benefits.

The Town of Lewiston Senior Center will hold a food drive from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, May 30, to benefit the Care-N-Share Food Pantry in Ransomville. The donation drop-off will take place at the Lewiston Senior Center, 4361 Lower River Road, to assist the pantry in restocking its shelves.

On Saturday, May 23, Niagara County Community College hosted a virtual commencement celebration for the Class of 2020, recognizing over 900 graduates. The prerecorded video allowed graduates to submit a photo of themselves, future plans, and messages of appreciation to friends and family. Additionally, the video included remarks from SUNY Chancellor Kristina Johnson, and NCCC President William Murabito.

Over 20 families participated in the VFW Post 313 Youngstown Memorial Day car drive-by remembrance Monday at Universal, Saint Bernard's, Oakland Rural and Old Fort Niagara cemeteries. At each site, veterans got out of their vehicles and offered a salute to their fallen comrades and a wreath was placed at the War of 1812 monument at Old Fort Niagara.

Attention Village of Wilson residents: The Department of Public Works will be flushing water lines for a few days, beginning Tuesday morning. This may cause low water pressure and possibly brownish water. The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston donated more than a dozen food packs to the village's Department of Public Works on Friday. Each kit included a can of soup or ravioli, a reusable bowl, oatmeal, pudding, water and, of course, peaches - all courtesy of Kiwanian Dean Beltrano. In addition, Kiwanian Jan Mathews dropped off a tray of cookies.
