Niagara University's student-led pre-law honor society, Phi Delta Phi, Belva Lockwood Hall, inducted 12 pre-law students on Thursday, May 7. Stephanie Cole Adams, former university general counsel and founder of the Law Office of Stephanie Adams, was honorary inductee. The ceremony was held via Zoom due to social distancing requirements.

The Board of Education election and budget vote will take place on Tuesday, June 9. It will be conducted entirely by mail-in ballot. Per guidance from New York state, we will first send out a postcard outlining specifics of the budget, election and voter qualification to each household. Official ballots will be mailed the third week of May to each of the 20,000 registered voters in the district.

During the next several weeks, U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) will conduct the June Agricultural Survey. The agency will contact producers across the region to determine crop acreage and stock levels as of June 1.

What started as a group of eight students who shared a passion for video games has quickly become an officially recognized student organization and club sport at Niagara University with more than 40 members. In their inaugural year, NU's esports teams have competed on a weekly basis against other esports programs across the country as a member of the Division 1 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) and the Electronic Gaming Federation (EGF).

What would have been the 15th annual Special Olympics New York's Western Regional Basketball Tournament on the Niagara University campus was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. But that didn't mean that the student coaches and their extraordinary athletes ended their relationship. Instead, the students have used the #Fit5NY Facebook page to post workout routines, healthy recipes and encourage one another to stay fit and motivated.

This has occurred due to the temporary layoffs agreed to by Niagara County and the Civil Service Employees Association Union.

Dozens of people were out and about in the Village of Lewiston enjoying the summer-like weather. They were walking down Center Street, eating on picnic tables and sitting on benches, looking at monuments, licking ice cream in Academy Park, and sprawled out on Water Street, looking out on the river. Many of those people were not wearing a mask or cloth face covering.

Andrew Cuomo's announcement on April 21 lifting the restrictions for Niagara County's hospitals to perform elective surgeries, Mount St. Mary's Hospital designed a careful process to reopen its surgery department to elective procedures, recognizing it was more than just "flipping a switch."

At a time when quality and safety are paramount in health care, Catholic Health once again received Western New York's highest cumulative score in the Leapfrog Group's Spring 2020 Hospital Safety Grade Report. In the national report released this week, Kenmore Mercy Hospital and Mount St. Mary's Hospital earned consecutive "A" safety grades, while Mercy Hospital of Buffalo, Sisters of Charity Hospital and its St. Joseph Campus each earned a "B" grade, improving their overall scores from last year's fall report.

#GivingTuesday is a national charitable fundraising effort, traditionally held annually in November. Due to the unprecedented needs of not-for-profit organizations caused by COVID-19, a new global day of giving and unity will now be held May 5. The event is designed to drive an influx of giving, helping to mitigate the growing impact of revenue losses experienced by charities, due to the current viral pandemic.
