DEC announces Lake Ontario fisheries public meetings

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced upcoming public meetings on the status of Lake Ontario's alewife population and the salmon and trout fisheries it supports.

State Parks duck blind drawings announced

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation announced the annual duck blind drawings for Fort Niagara, Joseph Davis, Wilson Tuscarora and Golden Hill state parks have been scheduled. Drawings will take place at 6:30 p.m. sharp in the Fort Niagara Park Maintenance Building on Oct. 24 and 31; Nov. 7, 14, 21 and 29; Dec. 5, 12, 19 and 26; and Jan. 2 and 9, 2020.

VFW welcomes soldiers to Lewiston

Veterans of Foreign Wars Downriver Post 7487 welcomed a handful of recuperating D.C.-area soldiers to Lewiston on Sunday. The men were taken out on three charter boats to fish for bass and lake trout along the river. They then returned to Water Street for lunch at Lower Niagara Moose Lodge No. 584.

An encore performance of the next murder mystery/wine and food pairing dinner at The Winery at Marjim Manor will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 9. "Who Bounced the Bouncer," a 1920s murder mystery, sold-out its first performance, and there were many requests for tickets, thus prompting a second showing.

LaFlair worked alongside the Lower Niagara Community Survivors group in raising funds for others - for people she didn't know and had never met, who were battling the disease and in need of assistance.

When water supplies exceed capacity in the Lake Ontario-St. Lawrence River system, water levels rise. When this happens, regulation is looked to as the solution. But during periods of extreme water supply, the ability of regulated outflows to influence Lake Ontario levels is greatly diminished. In practical terms, no regulation plan can eliminate high water events on Lake Ontario or the St. Lawrence River.
