Artpark's "Tuesdays in the Park" concert this week was definitely weird. Not weird as in strange, but weird as in Al Yankovic. He brought his "Strings Attached" tour to Lewiston - complete with a top-notch backing band, a 41-piece orchestra, numerous video packages, and, of course, unique costume changes.

The medical staff of Mount St. Mary's Hospital has awarded scholarships to four local high school students, and one hospital associate, to advance their education.

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston announced the awarding of scholarships to Nicholas Passanese, Suhana Monsalve, Domenic Barile and Miguel Bautista. Lewiston Kiwanis awarded Passanese a $2,000 scholarship, while scholarships of $1,000 each were presented to Monsalve and Barile.

In the U.S., vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks are occurring in schools, churches, religious groups and other group settings with low immunization rates. New York state has experienced increased numbers of measles outbreaks in areas with low immunization rates of children. This was due to religious exemptions that resulted in unvaccinated children attending schools where disease was spread to other unvaccinated children, some of whom cannot receive vaccines due to medical conditions.

From the first sign of spring through the last semblance of summer, Center Street is bustling and restaurants are overflowing. And yet, as Lewiston continues to make headlines for its many offerings, an important piece of village culture is being overlooked: the artistic community.

Yankovic is a pop culture legend recently seen as a T-shirt on "Stranger Things," and paying homage to Lin-Manuel Miranda's Broadway masterpiece with "The Hamilton Polka."

A smaller but peppier Artpark crowd was treated to the most fun concert of the 2019 "Tuesdays in the Park" concert series this week. Sugar Ray, Better Than Ezra and Emerson Hart of Tonic had people on their feet, singing and dancing along to some of the 1990's biggest hits.

Though rains threatened to spoil the party, Artpark & Company's "Free Family Saturdays" kicked off in fine fashion over the weekend. In fact, children and parents dodged some drops and came out early to make slime, a colorful mask or play with an assortment of toys atop a sandy hill.

I recently took a little tour of the launch ramp at Wilson Harbor, searching for a safe place to launch a boat. I knew the lower river launches were a mess except for Lewiston, but Lewiston is a long way from the lake.

Old Fort Niagara anticipates welcoming about 500 reenactors and close to 10,000 visitors over the weekend of July 5-7 for the 40th anniversary of the French and Indian War Encampment. This annual event recreates highlights from the actual 19-day British siege of the French fort in July of 1759 through history tours, cannon firings, military music, sutlers, games, dancing, musket firings and living history camps of British, French and Native reenactors.
