Niagara University to offer guaranteed internships, stipends to students in its Pathways Program

According to a 2019 student survey conducted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, more than half of all students who completed an internship received a job offer within six months of graduation. To facilitate these opportunities for a greater number of students, Niagara University's Office of Career Services is enhancing its innovative Pathways Program to guarantee internships for participants and to provide stipends to students whose internships are unpaid.

City of North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur G. Pappas reminds the residents of North Tonawanda that the off-street parking restrictions begin Sunday, Nov. 1. There is no parking permitted on any city street between the hours of 3 and 6 a.m. until April 1.

Earlier this week, New York state's movie theater industry breathed a collective sigh of relief as Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced theaters across the state (except for NYC) could finally begin to reopen. Per state safety guidelines, theaters can only maintain a 25% capacity; with no more than 50 people in front of each movie screen.

Meet "Josh Allen," the Wheatfield Pumpkin Farm's 2,000-pound steer. Farmer Jim DeVantier, who has owned and operated the farm for over 30 years, affectionately named him after Josh Allen, quarterback for the Buffalo Bills. The steer is the star of the daytime hayride at the farm, which runs daily from 11 a.m. until 7 p.m.

The Niagara County Board of Elections will be open expanded hours for absentee balloting ahead of the Nov. 3 general election: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 21-22; Monday, Oct. 26, and Wednesday, Oct. 28; and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays, Oct. 24 and 31.

The Town of Niagara added a message regarding Military Road school to its website on Thursday. The school, which closed in 1992, was all but burned down in 2019 as the result of arson. It has remained an eyesore for residents ever since.

This year presents new ideas and challenges for the holidays. Since we are still attempting to keep the rate of COVID-19 infection low, there are new guidelines for Halloween from the CDC. Their recommendations are to avoid door-to-door trick or treating, although Gov. Cuomo did say it was allowed in NYS.
Niagara Wheatfield's new athletic field stirs Falcon pride for a pair of alumni

Recently, Niagara Wheatfield High School celebrated the completion of its new multipurpose athletic field. The project, which was estimated to cost $7.6 million, included an all-new synthetic turf field and is able to accommodate football, baseball, softball, lacrosse, soccer and field hockey. The project also included new bleachers (able to seat 2,000 home and 500 away fans), scoreboards, lights, fencing and backstops.

The sales tax revenue his city receives is expected to include a $1 million revenue gap Tylec estimates due to the economic impacts of COVID-19.

Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Becky Wydysh and Acting Sheriff Michael Filicetti on Monday announced the next meeting of the county task force charged with complying with Gov. Andrew Cuomo's mandate that local governments undertake a police reform and reinvention collaborative initiative. The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 1334 Calumet Ave., Niagara Falls. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend to express their opinions.
