U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Flotilla 3-1 will offer its "About Boating Safety" one-day class this spring and early summer in the River Region. Classes will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays, Feb. 29, March 28, April (TBA), May 16 and June 20, at the Officers Club, Fort Niagara State Park in Youngstown. An additional class will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Lewiston Fire Co. No. 2, 1705 Saunders Settlement Road.

Pre-K is starting up for Niagara-Wheatfield School District. To be held at the Bunny Bunch Day Care, the classes have already filled 120 spaces in nine classes, but there are 21 slots remaining for parents to register their children. Best of all, the classes are free.

This past Monday, the manager of the Wheatfield Gardens greenhouses, Paal Eflstrum, came in front of the Town Board of Wheatfield to update the board members on some of the changes he had made on the border - as documented in a letter to the town - with the Timberlakes subdivision, and asked the board for further instructions on how to be "good neighbors."

A quick Google search will show the word "empower" means to give someone the authority or power to do something; or make (someone) stronger and more confident, especially in controlling their life and claiming their rights. Similar words of both definition, from that same search include: authorize, emancipate, unshackle and permit. Bearing this in mind might explain why United Cerebral Palsy Association of Niagara County Inc. took it on as its nomenclature and became Empower in 2015.

North Tonawanda's Common Council Meeting began with the "State of the City" address by Mayor Arthur Pappas. The subjects of focus for the address included development, jobs, highway and water projects, as well as the bail and discovery/speedy trial reform laws enacted at the beginning of the year by the state.

The Merrell Lane Memorial Aviation Scholarship was established in memory of Merrell Lane, co-founder and the first chairman of the Niagara Military Affairs Council (NIMAC). Each year, NIMAC awards a $1,500 scholarship to a well-deserving enlisted member assigned to the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station who has shown an interest in the aviation field.

Food insecurity has been targeted as an issue that affects nearly half of all college students, and can be a barrier to academic success and even affect graduation. A food pantry was established at Niagara County Community College in 2016 - and continues to expand - to address the growing needs.

Rather than take the day off for the federal holiday, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday, BankOnBuffalo employees decided to turn their "day on," by helping at Community Missions of Niagara Frontier's Clothes Closet. Joining staff, the bankers worked organizing clothes at the Buffalo Avenue location, while volunteers from Damascus Baptist Church worked in the kitchen.

Over the weekend, the seventh annual Greater Niagara Fishing and Outdoor Expo invaded downtown Niagara Falls. The event was held at the Conference and Event Center with a focus on "Teaching Fishing" to the legions of anglers that can be found in New York, Southern Ontario and other nearby states.
