Collins: $2.5M in federal funding for Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority

Congressman Chris Collins announced the U.S. Department of Transportation's Low or No Emission Program has allocated $2,500,000 to the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority. This grant provides funding to state and local governmental authorities for the purchase or lease of zero-emission and low-emission transit buses.
DOT to host public information meeting on proposed bridge replacements in Niagara County

The New York State Department of Transportation will host a public information meeting from 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, at the Porter Town Hall, located at 3265 Creek Road, Youngstown. The informal, open house meeting will cover a proposed project to replace three bridges located on NY Route 93, Youngstown-Lockport Road, and NY Route 425, Cambria-Wilson Road, over Twelvemile Creek and branches of Twelvemile Creek, in the towns of Porter and Wilson.

Wheatfield Town Historian and artist Justin J.M. Higner/Higner Maritime Artworks unveiled the mixed-media artwork "Laurentic III" theoretical cruise liner of White Star Line Cruises (1998). The liner succeeded the "Oceanic IV" (2004), which was on display for over a month. It was restored for the Castellani Art Museum show in 2018-19 and can be seen at Firth Jewelers, 2435 Military Road.

Unyts & Shawnee Volunteer Fire Co. hosting Brandon Kupiec Memorial Blood Drive

Members of the Kupiec family, along with Unyts and the Shawnee Volunteer Fire Co., are hosting a community blood drive honoring the memory of North Tonawanda native Brandon Kupiec from 1 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 1. Kupiec died unexpectedly in 2013 at the age of 20. His family holds this yearly event in his honor. Shawnee Volunteer Fire Co. will host the event at the firehall, 3747 Lockport Road.
Niagara County: Parents, caregivers encouraged to be familiar with immunization requirements

In the U.S., vaccine-preventable disease outbreaks are occurring in schools, churches, religious groups and other group settings with low immunization rates. New York state has experienced increased numbers of measles outbreaks in areas with low immunization rates of children. This was due to religious exemptions that resulted in unvaccinated children attending schools where disease was spread to other unvaccinated children, some of whom cannot receive vaccines due to medical conditions.
'Heart of a Falcon' scholarships presented to 10 winners

SRO returning to NT School District for 2019-20

It was a light and brief meeting for the North Tonawanda Common Council, but security in schools was an important item put forth to the agenda.  The council entered into an agreement Tuesday with the North Tonawanda City School District to assign a North Tonawanda police officer as school resource officer at the middle and high schools.

The Chapel purchasing Niagara Catholic HS facility

The Firemen's Association of the State of New York has awarded the 2019 FASNY Gerard J. Buckenmeyer Volunteer Scholarship to Megan Amacher of Sanborn. Amacher received a certificate and scholarship of $1,500 for her volunteer service in the community from Andrew Pilecki, member of the FASNY board of directors.

Empower, a Niagara County-based not-for-profit service provider, was awarded the 2019 Partnership Award by the Western New York coalition of the Self-Advocacy Association of New York State Inc. at Developmental Disabilities Day on Thursday, May 30. Empower received this award for its involvement of people with disabilities in its daily operations, and creation of more opportunities for them to participate in the community.

Marlee McCabe wears many hats as public relations assistant at Niagara County Community College, and taking photographs at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute.  McCabe is frequently seen behind the lens of her Nikon camera, capturing instructors teaching the next generation of culinary professionals, and showcasing the delicious fruits of their labor. Her images often leave people hungry for more, and NFCI said it's happy to oblige.     
Wrestling stars coming to region

Empire State Wrestling returns to St. Johnsburg Firehall, 7165 Ward Road, on Saturday, June 29, for "Temperature Rising." Pre-sale general admission tickets are $15. Tickets increase $5 on the day of the event. Front and second row tickets are sold out. Doors open at 5 p.m. with bell-time at 6 p.m. "Temperature Rising" will air live on Twitch and be recorded for ESW's streaming service partners.
