This project started almost 10 years ago when I asked the people from the American Legion if they had a list to go by when they place the flags on the graves of veterans. They said that they did not have a list, but they would love one. As of April 28, I have a tentative list of vets buried at Oakwood Cemetery who may not have either a marker of any kind or a private marker with no military designation on it.

Kids from North Tonawanda will put crayons to paper and draw their dream playground, which will ultimately become a reality with support from the Ralph C. Wilson Jr. Foundation, the City of North Tonawanda, BlueCrossBlueShield of Western New York's "Blue Fund," and KaBOOM!. The partners recently awarded the City of North Tonawanda with a "Build it with KaBOOM!" playground grant.

Congressman Brian Higgins was joined Monday by representatives from People Inc., Western New York Independent Living and the National Coalition for Assistive & Rehab Technology to announce federal legislation to make it easier for individuals with significant disabilities and chronic medical conditions to access specialized wheelchairs and adaptive equipment technology. Reps. Higgins and Jim Sensenbrenner have introduced H.R. 2408, the Ensuring Access to Quality Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act. The bipartisan bill creates a separate benefit category under Medicare to cover complex wheelchair and other adaptive equipment for people with severe medical needs.

On April 13, Niagara-Wheatfield ADK held its annual Fashion Show. The fashions, modeled by ADK members, were provided by Talbots of the Fashion Outlets Mall. Proceeds from the event go to the annual scholarship for a Niagara-Wheatfield student. This year, the scholarship was won by Olivia Gonyea.

Former Pekin Fire Co. President Lawrence Amacher Jr. was arrested last Wednesday for allegedly stealing $1,800 from the company's bell jar collection for his personal use, and falsifying records to hide his theft, according to New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli.
