Town of Niagara Planning Board tables discussion on Bri Estates

On Tuesday evening at the Town of Niagara Town Hall, the Town Planning Board held its monthly meeting. Discussion on the revised Bri Estates site plan was expected, but the board had to table all discussion after developers from Double C Realty felt the need to make changes to their plan and submit an updated proposal. Planning Board members agreed they didn't know what changes would be made to the proposal.
Drake Elementary student honored for volunteerism

NCCC Alumni Association to host 5K run/walk

The Niagara County Community College Alumni Association will host its 20th annual 5K run/walk on Friday, May 4, beginning at 6:30 p.m. The course is USA Track and Field certified and features a fast, flat route around the scenic NCCC campus in Sanborn. The event is open to the public, alumni, faculty, staff and students.

This past weekend, the NFL held its annual draft, selecting over 200 players from college programs across the nation. Lucas Gravelle's name wasn't called, but the Niagara-Wheatfield High School alum will still get a chance to play in the NFL. Gravelle was signed by the Miami Dolphins as an undrafted free agent.

The Health Association of Niagara County Inc. has a 90-year history of caring for and supporting residents of the Niagara County community. This Saturday, from 2-4 p.m. at the Wheatfield Community Center, 2790 Church Road, HANCI will celebrate a book launch and release for its "Faces of Niagara." The publication, being released to the community for the first time on Saturday, celebrates the lives of almost 70 Niagara County residents aged 90 and older.
NCCC announces keynote speakers for 54th annual commencement ceremonies

Niagara County Community College Interim President William J. Murabito announced Tuesday that Stephen Eden, New York State Sen. Robert Ortt and JoAnn Pellegrino will deliver the keynote addresses at the college's 54th annual commencement ceremonies. As a change from the past few years, there will be three ceremonies taking place on the Sanborn campus at 9 and 11:30 a.m., and 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12, in the Arts and Media Theatre.

Ten babies perished in unsafe sleep conditions in Niagara County during the past five years - three of them in 2017 alone. Most were sleeping on an unsafe surface such as an adult bed, sofa or chair, and most were sleeping with at least one other person. All were under 6 months of age; eight were less than 3 months old.

Niagara County Central Rotary to hold free breakfast

On Saturday, May 12, the Niagara County Central Rotary will host its annual pancake breakfast in the Niagara-Wheatfield High School cafeteria. The breakfast, which starts at 8:30 p.m., is free to the public and come with pancakes, scrambled eggs, sausage, fruit cup and either coffee, tea, milk or orange juice.

Christian Academy celebrates 25th year

Christian Academy recently announced the celebration of its 25th year of operation. The event will include a public open house and basket raffle from noon-3 p.m. on Saturday, April 21. More than 100 baskets, including many gift cards, a 28-inch Samsung TV, silver necklace and items from several area businesses, will be available. Admission is free.

Niagara County Sheriff James R. Voutour has announced the new addition to the sheriff's office canine team has been named in honor of Chief Craig C. Harmon, who was the chief of the Niagara County Drug Task Force when he passed away in 2004. The new canine, Chief, is currently in training with handler Deputy Richard Bull. He was purchased through many generous donations and funding from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

North Tonawanda holding happy hour public workshop

In October, Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced North Tonawanda was a recipient of $2.5 million as part of the $20 million Smart Growth Community Fund Buffalo Billion II initiative. North Tonawanda, as well as the other municipalities that received $2.5 million, such as the City of Dunkirk, City of Lackawanna and Village of Gowanda, are focusing on projects that utilize existing infrastructure to support placemaking, walkable communities and sustainable development. Funding awards were recommended and approved by the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council.

Tuesday afternoon, the Niagara County Host Community Standing Committee, which administers and oversees projects funded by Niagara River Greenway funding, held a brief meeting to hear several proposals. Two of the proposals came from Town of Niagara Supervisor Lee Wallace, who is also a vice chairperson to the group.
