For years, Terry Vosburgh, CEO of Voz Cycle City, has been giving back to the local community with toy funds that help children and families have an enjoyable holiday season. In 2017, Vosburgh, with the help of local organizations and businesses, raised over $10,000 that went to purchasing toys and bicycles for local families with veterans through WNY Heroes.

A portion of Vandervoort Street will be dedicated as "Hope Way" on Jan. 6 to honor the efforts of local organizations and community members who are working together to bring hope to the city and a neighborhood where hope is needed.

At Tuesday night's reorganization meeting for the City of North Tonawanda, the Common Council voted to keep Alderman Eric Zadzilka as the president of the council. Alderman Robert Pecoraro initially nominated Zadzilka, which then Alderman Donna Braun seconded. There were no other nominations for the spot.

On Dec. 7, as guests of the Wheatfield Lions Club annual Christmas party, the club had the privilege of having the 20 N. District Gov. Lion Sharon Battaglia who, along with addressing Lions concerns, gave an informative and heartfelt presentation on domestic violence awareness, and other senior Lion officials.

On Thursday, New York State Sen. Rob Ortt, R-North Tonawanda, called on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to delay the NY SAFE Act's pistol recertification deadline. As outlined in the NY SAFE Act, pistol permitholders who fail to recertify their license by the Jan. 31 deadline will have their license revoked.

Wheatfield Commons, a DePaul Senior Living Community located at 3920 Forest Parkway in Wheatfield, celebrated its grand opening on Wednesday, Dec. 20. A 55,000-square-foot senior living community providing both assisted living and memory care accommodations to families in and around Niagara County, Wheatfield Commons is now open and accepting new residents.

On Friday, Dec. 8, Section VI held its fourth annual Hall of Fame Induction ceremony at the Columns Banquets in Elma. Four people from the Niagara Region were inducted into the 2017 class, including John Hayes, former basketball player at Niagara Falls; Rich Kilgour, former lacrosse player at Niagara-Wheatfield; Patrick Monti, former basketball coach of LaSalle; and Harris Wienke, former athlete at Niagara-Wheatfield.

On Dec. 11, Lake Ontario Post 313 Veterans of Foreign Wars presented recognition plaques and proclamations to Town of Niagara officials for their support of local veterans.

Thanks to artists from Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, several walls at Mount St. Mary's Hospital are now adorned with artwork. Displays have been placed in four separate areas for the enjoyment of physicians, staff and visitors. Some of the artists recently visited the hospital to view the displays.

On Tuesday night, North Tonawanda Mayor Arthur Pappas announced the next round of Hometown Heroes banners to be revealed in the city. The banners are now open to all veterans and not just active duty members. This year the American Legion Sikora Post 1322 recognized MM2 Stephen Sikora, U.S. Navy; Sgt. John Lukasik, U.S. Army Corps; and PFC Stanley Maziarz, U.S. Army.

The Niagara-Wheatfield Kiwanis sponsors four individual SLP's within the Niagara-Wheatfield school district; K-Kids at West Street, Colonial Village and Errick Road elementary schools and a Builder's Club at Edward Town Middle School.

U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy Jr. announced Michael O'Neill, 47, of Niagara Falls, who was convicted of unlawful possession of a destructive device, was sentenced to 30 months in prison by U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford.

The telethon ran from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. at Niagara Falls High School, between the main set in the performing arts center and the cafeteria, where there was a basket auction and various donations.

On Monday night at the Niagara Falls Culinary Institute, 28 Old Falls St., Niagara Falls, there was a live auction for winning gingerbread houses judged. There were five categories of gingerbread houses: amateur division, children's division, college division, high school division and professional division.
