Grand Island's Jodie White wants to be a musician. She will use her scholarship from the Grand Island Professional Women's Chapter, New York State Women, to attend SUNY Fredonia to major in music education. Her classes start Aug. 26.

Richard W. Hirsch passed away Aug. 1, 2013. He leaves his loving wife, Lydia, daughter Lillian (husband Arnold Wosilait deceased), grandson Ronald R. Wosilait, his sister Elena Toffler and many loving nieces, nephews and dear friends. He was predeceased by his sisters Lydia, Alma, brothers Albert, Adolf, Oswald and Paul. The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation has extended the deadline for two separate requests for proposals at Beaver Island State Park for food, beverage and catering operations, as well as operation of the golf course and food and beverage at the State Park golf course. The revised due date for both RFPs is 2 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23.

•Ava Pannozzo, the 4-year-old daughter of Christopher and Ida Maria (Colangelo) Pannozzo, was recently diagnosed with a rare immune disease called familial HLH. She is currently receiving chemotherapy, but is in need of a bone marrow transplant.

NOCO Express Stores, its customers, and employees recently joined forces to support Hospice Foundation of Western New York. Throughout the entire month of June, paper sunflowers were sold for $1 each at all of NOCO Express' 35 locations to benefit Hospice for a total donation of $11,410.

New York State Sen. Mark Grisanti, R-I-Buffalo, submitted a letter to the chief district judge of the United States District Court, asking for the maximum fine that is allowed by law to be handed to Tonawanda Coke Corporation for the illegal actions and willful violation of environmental law that resulted in health-related problems and illnesses for some residents who live near the Tonawanda Coke facility.

Dr. Joshua Smith of Serene Gardens on Grand Island Boulevard is hoping the Grand Island Garden Tour will open some horizons when it debuts July 6 and 7, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
"It's the first time Grand Island's been a part of the national garden tour," Smith said. "It's all free for everyone to join as well as free for everyone to visit the tour, visit the houses."
