On Tuesday, the Erie County Agricultural Society announced the James E. Strates Shows will feature the return of the legendary 80-foot-high double-Ferris wheel called the Sky Wheel on its midway in 2019. This limited, one-time engagement is part of the celebration commemorating the 95th year of the Strates Shows at the Erie County Fair.

Congressman Brian Higgins was joined Monday by representatives from People Inc., Western New York Independent Living and the National Coalition for Assistive & Rehab Technology to announce federal legislation to make it easier for individuals with significant disabilities and chronic medical conditions to access specialized wheelchairs and adaptive equipment technology. Reps. Higgins and Jim Sensenbrenner have introduced H.R. 2408, the Ensuring Access to Quality Complex Rehabilitation Technology Act. The bipartisan bill creates a separate benefit category under Medicare to cover complex wheelchair and other adaptive equipment for people with severe medical needs.

The Grand Island Lions Club will hold the 50th annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the Special Kids Picnic from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday, April 29, in the ballroom of Radisson Grand Island, 100 Whitehaven Road. The menu includes spaghetti and meatballs, salad and Italian bread. Money from the event will support the annual Special Kids Picnic in July.

Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns is warning Erie County residents of a phone scam where incoming calls will appear on a caller ID display as coming from the Erie County Clerk's Office. The scammer then requests personal identifying information while proposing to offer debt relief services.

The SYEP is an important platform to introduce youth 14 through 20 years of age to the workforce. Spring is here and it is time to start thinking about planting and enjoying gardens. The fourth annual Grand Island Garden Walk will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, July 7. The Garden Walk is a free event for participating gardens and for the public. Hundreds of visitors have toured and admired Island gardens during past walks, and such annual successes have the planning committee excited for the 2019 gardening season.

People who compost are able to improve the health of their gardens, as well as reduce the amount of waste that they leave for the garbage truck each week, said master gardener Bonnie Benton. Benton spoke to a full house at a presentation organized by the Grand Island Farmers Market and sponsored by the town's Conservation Advisory Board on March 28 at the WNY Welcome Center.

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz announced a slate of county public works projects that are planned for 2019 on Monday, March 25. This year, Erie County will spend over $40 million to maintain and repair county roads along with bridges and other structures, including curbing and drainage. The work will be completed by the Erie County Department of Public Works and is scheduled to begin as soon as the weather allows.

The Erie County Department of Parks, Recreation and Forestry is preparing for warmer weather and is now accepting applications for seasonal employment in 2019. Available positions include cashiers and starters at both Elma Meadows and Grover Cleveland golf courses, park maintenance workers for various locations throughout the parks' system, and lifeguards at the beach.
