$100,000 grant awarded to Family Promise of Western New York

Family Promise of Western New York, an emergency shelter for families experiencing homelessness, has been awarded $100,000 from the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance's Homeless Housing and Assistance Program. The award completes a $200,000 capital campaign the organization has been fundraising over the past year for critical upgrades to its emergency shelter for families.

On Thursday, Aug. 29, local residents who have demonstrated an extraordinary lifetime commitment to service will be inducted into the Niagara Falls Volunteer Hall of Fame. This year's honorees are Georgia Robinson Bradberry, Jane Schroeder, Don King and Laurie Davis (posthumously). Jasiah Jackson will be honored with the inaugural GenNext Award, which was established to recognize outstanding youth age 18 and under for exemplary service to the community.

The musical icon, Lilith Fair creator and Sarah McLachlan School of Music founder was, per usual, vocally dynamic, making for a memorable occasion. As she did in 2014, McLachlan shared stories, explained song origins and thanked fans for supporting her now 31-year career.

Fearing thunderstorms would postpone (or worse, cancel) Tuesday's outdoor concert with Chris Isaak, Artpark & Company officials moved the show into the Mainstage Theater. It was a smart move, as the colors of the concert hall matched perfectly with the singer's colorful production - not to mention his outfit and the duds of his traveling troubadours.

Town of Lewiston Supervisor Steve Broderick was given a citation from the Sanborn Area Historical Society at the Sanborn-Lewiston Farm Museum Festival for providing the society help financing a feasibility study; purchasing the farm in 2002; continuing to support it over the years, including this year; completing the museum's parking lot and connecting the venue to the town sewers, allowing the Sanborn-Lewiston Farm Museum to be open all year for the first time.

Community dispute resolution program launched in Buffalo City Court

Erie County District Attorney John J. Flynn announced the establishment of the community dispute resolution program (CDR) in Buffalo City Court, a restorative justice alternative to criminal proceedings to resolve issues between parties. The diversion program will utilize mediation and conflict coaching to facilitate conversations between a complainant and defendant with a neutral third party to identify issues, clarify perceptions, and explore options for an acceptable resolution.
Golf tournament nets $29K for hospital foundation

The board of associates of Mount St. Mary's Hospital presented a check in the amount of $29,000 to the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation from the proceeds from its 39th annual Louis J. Fernandez Golf Classic. The event took place Monday at the Niagara Frontier Golf Club and included more than 124 golfers.
