Niagara University is again listed among the best colleges and universities in the north, according to annual rankings released Sept. 12 by U.S. News and World Report. NU is listed 70 among 133 colleges and universities in the northeastern U.S. that provide a full range of undergraduate and master's degree programs.

The Lewiston Garden Club has awarded its 2012 scholarship of $1,000 to Amanda Smith. She is a 2012 Lew-Port graduate who has begun her collegiate career at Niagara University. Smith's goal is to become an environmental lawyer.

State Sen. George Maziarz announced Thursday he was able to secure funding for the five school districts in Orleans County from the Legislative Education Aid Grant Process. Each of the five districts - Albion, Holley, Kendall, Lyndonville and Medina - will receive $50,000 to spend in their district on what their top priorities are. Maziarz was joined by the school district superintendents to announce the awarding of the funding as the new school year starts.

Beginning Sept. 19, Border Community SERVICE of Niagara University is hosting a free CERT training course at Cambria Fire Co., 4631 Cambria-Wilson Road, Cambria (Lockport). Classes run for nine consecutive Wednesday nights from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m., culminating with a disaster simulation on Nov. 14.

Niagara University has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar-in-Residence grant to host a visiting foreign professor for the fall 2012 semester. Assefa Beyene Bassa, a Ph.D. candidate at Andhra University in India and a lecturer at Dilla University in Ethiopia, will work closely with several sectors on Niagara's campus, especially its College of Education.

Balloons Over Niagara returns to the campus, July 27 to 29, repeating the excitement of 25 hot air balloons taking to the sky in 2008 to celebrate the county's bicentennial.
