On Friday, Sept. 9, the City of Niagara Falls, the P2 Collaborative of Western New York, and Niagara University kick off "Creating a Healthier Niagara Falls: A Neighborhood Empowerment Approach." An official ribbon-cutting ceremony will take place at noon to celebrate the opening of the outreach office inside the Anthony Spallino Towers at 720 Tenth St., Niagara Falls.

St. Peter's R.C. Church and St. Peter School have announced that Dr. James P. Moore is serving as chairman of the seventh annual Golf Classic sponsored by St. Peter's. The tournament, which is open to the public, will be played Monday, Oct. 3, at the Niagara Falls Country Club.

Niagara University announces Carrie McLaughlin has been named the new dean of students following a nationwide search. McLaughlin comes to Niagara after five years as the director of student life at Loyola University Maryland in Baltimore. She will begin her new position on Monday, Sept. 12.

Big changes are happening on the Niagara University campus. Some of these include major renovations to the Gallagher Center, the addition of new academic programs, changes for the academic calendar, a new set up for student records and financial services and, last but not least, more parking.

The Orleans/Niagara BOCES' Allied Health Program has won praise and credit from Niagara University. The career and technical education program assists students with an interest in the health sciences by exposing them to real life experience in the health care industry and prepares them for secondary education.

Niagara University has completed renovations to several of its campus offices this summer, freeing up a great deal of furniture. As part of its effort to remain environmentally friendly, the university is offering this gently used furniture to members of the community free of charge.

Niagara University's College of Education received approval to offer a new master's degree in early childhood and special education (birth - grade 2). The new M.S. Ed. program leads to initial and professional New York state teacher certification in both early childhood education and students with disabilities from birth through grade 2.

Students in Susan Akin's Time to Dance studio recently placed well at July's "Beyond the Stars" nationals in New Jersey. Out of 404 routines, Akin's elite-level dancers were asked to compete along with 31 other teams in the "Ultimate Challenge." From that bunch, Time to Dance performers finished fifth. In total, the school took home more than a dozen trophies (including one that's 4 feet tall).
