It's been the story all year for the Niagara-Wheatfield basketball team. The team competes and keeps the game close, but the opposition goes on a second half run to pull away. The story lived on Wednesday night and ended Niagara-Wheatfield's season, as the Frontier Falcons used a big 39-15 second half to pull away N-W.

The University at Buffalo's award-winning GRoW Home will soon need a change of address form. That's because the 1,100-square-foot, ultra-efficient dwelling will be relocated from its current spot on UB's South Campus to a more prominent, and permanent, location next to the Solar Strand on the university's North Campus.

The 2017-18 North Tonawanda Lumberjacks boys basketball team came into this year off one of their best seasons in program history. Coming off a sectional title, there were some unknowns as to how the team would perform this season. New faces surrounded the varsity squad, including 10th-grader Dante Moultrie.

Wednesday night, the North Tonawanda Lumberjacks faced the Grand Island Vikings in the Niagara Frontier League's third place crossover game. The Lumberjacks got off to a hot start, but the Vikings continued to push their way back, falling just short.
North Tonawanda defeated Grand Island, 59-53, in front of a loud Vikings crowd.

Niagara-Wheatfield coach Erik O'Bryan will admit, his team has been close in almost every game, but a big run by the opposing team seems to always haunt the Falcons at the end.
That's exactly what happened Monday night, as the Falcons dropped a non-league contest versus Maryvale, 65-49.

Grand Island coach Ron Krysztof will tell anyone his team's ability to shoot the 3-pointer is critical. Wednesday night versus Niagara-Wheatfield, they only made six, a little below their season average, but all six came at key times to spark a Vikings win.
The Vikings defeated the Falcons 51-30 Wednesday night for their second win in a row.

For the third year in a row, the Battle of the Border brought talent from north of the border in Ontario to Niagara Falls High School to face off against some of the best that Western New York has to offer. Although only three Canadian teams played in this year's classic, the players from Canada represented their side of the border well, winning two of the three games. There were also some familiar faces from last year's battle who returned to the Wolvarena for another bought with an American high school. Here is a full recap from the action on Saturday.

Friday night's North Tonawanda-Niagara Falls matchup was a game that many people attending will never forget. Both teams provided non-stop, on the edge of your seat action that was thrilling until the final horn sounded.
Like every basketball game, their must be a winner and the Wolverines were the victors, 58-55 in overtime.

Niagara-Wheatfield and St. Joes played the most hyped up hockey game scheduled for Wednesday night, as the No. 6 ranked team in the state faced the No. 9 ranked team in the state, respectively. After 50 minutes of play, though, there was no winner and no loser.
The Falcons and Marauders tied, 1-1, Wednesday night at the Hockey Outlet. N-W and St. Joes came in as the second and third place teams in Division, respectively.

Niagara-Wheatfield and North Tonawanda's battle Tuesday night was a tale of two halves. One was strictly defense and another was strictly offense. In the end, the Lumberjacks used a big 30-13 second half run to put the Falcons away, 56-39.

The Buffalo Sabres on Monday announced Tom Tzetzo has been named the recipient of the 2018 J. Michael Duffett Memorial Award, presented each year to the coach or administrator whose contributions to amateur hockey in Western New York "best exemplify the knowledge, teaching, love of the game and gentle humanity of Mike."

It's rare for an eighth-grader to play on a varsity team, let alone start. The Niagara Falls Wolverines are in rare company, as they start two eighth-graders. Saturday afternoon at Aquinas, eighth-grader Willie Lightfoot was a key in sealing the Wolverines victory.
The Falls defeated the Lil' Irish in their third road game in as many days, 68-55.

Students and teachers from the Lewiston Dance Center recently took part in a food drive for the Heart, Love & Soul Community Kitchen. Studio owners Rachel Novelli and Kathy Abbondanza decided to try boosting donations by getting the dance instructors involved. The result was a dance contest between the instructors. The class with the most donations would win a $50 gift card.

The Wolverines defeated the Falcons, 109-35, at Niagara-Wheatfield High School.

Niagara-Wheatfield head coach Rick Wrazin knows when his team is at its best. On Saturday night versus Lancaster, he saw some good things, but said his team was outplayed. Regardless, the Falcons won their third straight division game over the Legends, 2-0.

For about two weeks now, Niagara Frontier League teams and fans had Jan. 20 circled on the calendar for one reason; Niagara Falls versus Lockport.
The game was hyped up by players and students all over social media, as two of the top teams in the NFL battled on Saturday afternoon.
The Wolverines were the victors, defeating Lockport, 72-58.

On Friday night, the Charter School of Applied Technologies did not shoot the ball well, but the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons were not able to corral in defensive rebounds, giving the Eagles plenty of second chances. It stung in the end, as the Falcons were defeated by CSAT, 56-48.

The Battle at the Border is back at Niagara Falls High School. The one-day showcase on Saturday, Feb. 3, will feature four American high school basketball teams taking on four Canadian high school basketball teams. Some of the best talent, locally and nationally, will show off their skills at the Wolvarena.

On Thursday, Section VI boys golf Chairman Nate Leary announced that the section would hold its first annual Section VI boys golf team championship. The team aspect will be held alongside the annual individual championship and state qualifier. So, the tournament will not only crown an individual Section VI Champion and eight state tournament qualifiers, but also a Section VI team champion, something that hasn't been awarded in "many decades."

Niagara Catholic is at their best when they're running in transition and making teams play up to their speed. On Wednesday night at Cardinal O'Hara, that's exactly what they were able to do.
The Patriots defeated the Hawks, 64-50, in a big Monsignor Martin league game for both teams.

As a teacher and a coach at Niagara-Wheatfield, coach Steve Miller has a lot that he has to take care of. Miller also has a family, which he cares for dearly. This summer, though, he was dealt a tough blow.
Miller's wife, Krista, was diagnosed with breast cancer this past summer for the second time and he's been at the forefront taking care of his family. Along with that, he continues to help coach the Niagara-Wheatfield boys basketball team, which his son Cam Miller also plays for. The team has been nothing but supportive for the family, knowing what their coach and teammate is going through.

In any type of sport, when you play the best, mistakes just can't happen. For 30 minutes, the Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons played mostly good, mistake-free hockey. But, it was the final 15 minutes the doomed them in the end.
The Falcons took a tough loss to the hands of the reigning New York state champs, Williamsville North, 3-2, at the Northtown Center.

The Niagara Catholic Patriots defeated the Christian Central Academy Crusaders, 89-54, Wednesday night.

Coach Gary Jackson said his Niagara-Wheatfield girls basketball team had gotten off to slow starts in past games. On Tuesday night, it was anything but a slow start.
The Niagara-Wheatfield Falcons defeated the Starpoint Spartans in non-league action Tuesday night, 55-43.

The Niagara Catholic basketball team is a team that, when they play a fast pace they're tough to beat. When teams can slow them down, they have a tough time on offense. Both paces were seen on Monday night.

The Grand Island Central School District has introduced a new, responsive website design that launched Dec. 29. With the update, the website layout adjusts itself depending on the device being used. On smaller screens such as tablets or phones, a menu button appears above the logo that is used for navigation.

Amanda J. Oosterveer, a mental health counselor at the Niagara North Family Health Team's site in Niagara-on-the-Lake, received the Ontario Counselor of the Year Award from Niagara University's College of Education on Dec. 18. The award was presented by Dr. Chandra Foote, dean of NU's College of Education.
