A delegation of officials from the Niagara Military Affairs Council visited Washington, D.C., July 22-23 to meet with some of the top leaders from the U.S. Air Force, Department of Defense and New York Congressional Delegation to advocate on behalf of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station.

Explore & More Children's Museum has received a large anonymous donation through the Community Foundation for Greater Buffalo, another gift from The John R. Oishei Foundation, and a grant from the Peter C. Cornell Trust, all toward the growth and planning of the new museum set to open at Canalside on the Buffalo waterfront in 2016.

Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown now has a semi-automated external defibrillator on site, thanks to an underwriting grant from Univera Healthcare. With the device, known as an AED, the fort is better equipped to respond to a sudden cardiac arrest.

The Republican Party chairmen of the three counties in the 62nd Senate District - Scott Kiedrowski of Niagara County, Ed Morgan of Orleans County and Bill Reilich of Monroe County - issued the following statement Wednesday:
"Following the recommendation of the committee to fill vacancies, we are proud to announce North Tonawanda Mayor Rob Ortt as the endorsed Republican candidate for the 62nd Senate District."
Sen. George Maziarz announced Sunday he would not seek re-election.

McLachlan's appearance at Artpark was no insignificant happening. In fact, I'd liken it to Pope Francis giving Mass at St. Peter's, or President Obama presiding over a Village Board meeting.

The Western New York Land Conservancy has been awarded $300,000 to help create the Stella Niagara Preserve on the Niagara River in Lewiston. The grant is from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's Great Lakes Restoration Initiative through the Joint Venture Habitat Protection and Restoration Program.

State Sen. George D. Maziarz, R-C-I-Newfane, will not run for re-election this November. He issued the following statement Sunday night about his decision to decline nomination for another term in the New York State Senate:
"It is no secret to my family and close friends that I have been considering retirement from the State Legislature for the last five years. And as I geared up for another long campaign season, I realized I just did not have the passion and commitment that I have had in the past to see it through."
The GOP is expected to nominate North Tonawanda Mayor Robert Ortt for the State Senate position.

The National Cancer Institute has renewed the coveted and prestigious Cancer Center Support Grant to Roswell Park Cancer Institute following an in-depth peer review by cancer experts from around the U.S.
The NCI rated Roswell Park's application as "outstanding." The awarding of this noteworthy designation extends Roswell Park's world-class status as an NCI-designated comprehensive cancer center - the only one in upstate New York, and one of only 41 in the entire U.S.

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced Thursday the completion of an expansion project by Diversified Manufacturing, a manufacturing and engineering services firm in Lockport, which will facilitate the retention of 130 jobs. The nearly $5 million project was supported by $450,000 in funding from the New York Power Authority.

The Western New York Power Proceeds Allocation Board today recommended $625,000 in funding to two Western New York enterprises: Praxair Inc. and the Niagara Falls International Airport Stakeholders Group Inc. In total, the latest projects recommended for funding awards are expected to create 22 jobs, result in investments by project applicants of nearly $39 million, and ensure the long-term economic success of entities in Niagara County.

Residents in the Village of Lewiston re-elected Mayor Terry Collesano Tuesday. He will begin his second term in July.
Collesano, a Republican, defeated independent candidates Jamie Symmonds and Jacqueline Lampman by a 255-232-55 vote.
