Poloncarz, Jancewicz join law enforcement to announce holiday DWI enforcement campaign

Erie County Executive Mark C. Poloncarz was joined earlier this week by Commissioner of Central Police Services James Jancewicz and John Sullivan, director of the Erie County STOP-DWI office, alongside members of local and state law enforcement to reinforce a holiday safety message and announce the beginning of extra patrols as part of the state and national DWI enforcement campaign.
DEC report: 520 million pounds of electronic waste collected & diverted from landfills

State Department of Environmental Conservation Commissioner Basil Seggos announced the New York State Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act has driven the collection and recycling of more than 520 million pounds - or 260,000 tons - of electronic waste (e-waste) from 2011-16.

The U.S. Navy commissioned USS Little Rock (LCS 9) - the nation's fifth freedom-variant littoral combat ship (LCS) - on the Buffalo River on Saturday. This milestone officially places the ship, which was designed and built by Lockheed Martin and Fincantieri Marinette Marine, into active service.

Western New York REDC awarded $68.8 million for 112 projects

As part of Round VII of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's Regional Council initiative, the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council (WNYREDC) was awarded $68.8 million for 112 projects that build on the region's assets to invest in the future. The announcement, which supports projects in Allegany, Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie and Niagara counties, was made Wednesday in Albany.

Almost two-dozen Village of Lewiston residents came to the Zoning Board of Appeals meeting Tuesday night to oppose a dimensional variance request for a new build at lot No. 210 on South Third Street. Many hands were raised to voice an opinion but, before anyone had a chance to speak, ZBA Chairman H. John Ritter essentially took the words out of their mouths. He said he couldn't vote in favor of a municipal code alteration, which, he said, would "devalue" the neighboring properties.
Niagara County adopts $343m spending plan

Niagara County lawmakers approved a $343 million budget plan Tuesday night that reduces spending reducing taxes to their lowest level in decades, at $7.10 per $1,000 of assessed valuation.

Jacobs, Lyme task force seek to develop statewide disease protocol

New York State Sen. Chris Jacobs, a member of the State Senate Task Force on Lyme and Tick-Borne Diseases (TBDs), is co-sponsoring legislation that would require the New York state commissioner of health to develop a standard protocol for the diagnosis of these debilitating diseases. The bill (S.6926) would also require providers to provide patients with a notification form to better educate them about their test results.
