Mount St. Mary's Hospital to host free mammography day on Oct. 13

In honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Mount St. Mary's Hospital will host a free mammography screening from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 13, at the hospital, 5300 Military Road in Lewiston.

ESD announces seven finals judges for 43North 2018 competition

Empire State Development announced the panel of finals judges that will determine the prize money for the fifth annual 43North startup competition. The esteemed group of judges will evaluate pitches from 10 finalists on stage in front of a live audience at Shea's Performing Arts Center in downtown Buffalo at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5. The judges will award one top startup 43North's $1 million grand prize with seven other competitors receiving $500,000 prizes.

On Wednesday, the Buffalo City Mission announced the beginning of construction of the new, $15 million community center at 100 E. Tupper St. The 75,000-square-foot flagship facility will help prevent men, women and children from becoming homeless and provide more complete care to individuals who already experience homelessness.

Underwood on Sunday issued an alert to New Yorkers about the "Grandparent Scam," a common phone scam that targets senior citizens with calls from fraudsters that pose as a grandchild of the victim. Niagara Falls Community Development has extended the voting period for participatory budgeting (PB) 360 to Friday, Sept. 14. Niagara Falls Community Development has allocated $360,000 in its federal funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development for public space improvements in three neighborhoods of Niagara Falls: north end, middle Pine and south end. Each neighborhood will receive $120,000 of public space improvements based on how residents vote for the proposed projects.

The International Trade Commission has released a unanimous 5-0 ruling determining that antidumping and countervailing tariffs on Canadian imports of uncoated groundwood paper did not cause material harm to the U.S. paper industry, and has nullified them.
AAA fall gas price forecast: National gas price average could be 25 cents cheaper than during summer

AAA forecasts the national gas price average will drop to $2.70 this fall and has the potential to drop even more. That is 14 cents less a gallon compared to today's price and more than a quarter cheaper than this year's recorded high of $2.97 set in May.

The Buffalo Sabres on Wednesday announced the team will open its main training camp on Thursday, Sept. 13, when veteran players are scheduled to report for testing and physicals. Empire State Development on Tuesday announced the recipients of funding for Oath's Community Benefit Fund for Lockport and Oath's Yahoo Community Fund for Niagara County - Empire State Development. For the 2018 funding cycle, $510,000 was awarded to 20 projects. Each year from 2015-21, Oath has committed to granting $500,000 to community organizations in Lockport and the surrounding areas.

Today's national average price for a gallon of gasoline is $2.84, no change from last week. One year ago, the price was $2.36. The New York state average is $2.99, down a penny since last week. Rows of extra chairs were wheeled into the Morgan Lewis Village Boardroom on Monday night to accommodate the large number of residents who filed into the Red Brick to learn more about an "Oxford House" on Creek Road Extension. After about a half-hour of civil discourse at the monthly board meeting, residents were told the group home is legal.
