The New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (NYS OASAS) announced the launch of a new media campaign reminding people of the warning signs of addiction and overdoses, and that addiction can happen to anyone. It is designed to reach people traveling for the holidays and will run through the end of December. The campaign is partially funded with money awarded to New York State under the federal state opioid response grant.

Congressman Brian Higgins on Monday announced Mission:Ignite was awarded a three-year $1,021,122 federal grant to oversee a program that engages AmeriCorps members in expanding science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) skills among area youth. Mission:Ignite will match the grant with $449,000, while an additional $472,000 in AmeriCorps education awards will be available to participating AmeriCorps members, bringing total investment in the program to $1.942 million.

Heart, Love & Soul was founded by a prayer group from Sacred Heart Parish more than 30 years ago. Originally a pantry group, it became a place for a daily meal, and eventually moved to Ontario Avenue in the City of Niagara Falls.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the Department of Environmental Conservation announced early-bird savings for online renewals of the 2020 Empire Pass. Customers who keep their existing card and renew online before Jan. 1 will save $15 off a single or multi-season pass. Those users who renew online from Jan. 1 to March 31 will save $10 - and any online card renewals after those dates will receive a $5 discount from the standard price.

The Western New York Regional Economic Development Council announced Dr. Katherine Conway-Turner, president of Buffalo State College, has been appointed co-chair of the council. Conway-Turner succeeds Dr. Virginia Horvath, who served as co-chair since 2017 and who recently retired as president of SUNY Fredonia.

Three local nonprofit organizations have changed their names. West Side Neighborhood Housing Services, Black Rock-Riverside Housing Services and Niagara Falls Neighborhood Housing Services are now part of a Western New York collective called NeighborWorks Community Partners. The goal is to expand services across the state.

The Alzheimer's Association and CVS Health announced a three-year corporate partnership aimed at fighting Alzheimer's - a disease impacting more than 5 million Americans and 16 million caregivers across the country. The partnership is launching with an in-store fundraising campaign that will provide $10 million to support Alzheimer's Association programs, including those aimed at caregiver education, care and support, and disease research.

Empire State Development announced information sessions for the $2 million east side commercial district program, an initiative part of Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo's East Side Corridor Economic Development Fund. The program will provide up to $50,000 in grant assistance to commercial property owners in four commercial districts with buildings in need of exterior and interior repairs.

Fundraising is underway for those who plan to "take the plunge" into the frigid waters of Lake Erie and raise funds to benefit the Special Olympics New York athletes in Western New York. The "Polar Plunge" event will take place Saturday, Dec. 7, at Woodlawn Beach in Hamburg. Registration begins at 11 a.m., with the plunge taking place at 2 p.m.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is awarding $75 million to end youth homelessness in 23 local communities, including eight rural areas, across the country. HUD's youth homelessness demonstration program (YHDP) will help these communities to build local systems and will support a wide range of housing programs, including rapid rehousing, permanent supportive housing, transitional housing, and host homes.

Congressman Brian Higgins and Niagara Falls Mayor Paul Dyster announced the city was awarded a $44,114 federal grant through the Department of Justice's Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) Program to assist the police department in continuing to fund two part-time police liaison positions, as well as provide 16 handheld radios.
