Joe Marra of Niagara Falls recently celebrated his 95th birthday surrounded by some of his fellow volunteers at Mount St. Mary's Hospital. Marra has been volunteering at the hospital for 21 years.

Mount St. Mary's Hospital will hold its annual reverse draw fundraiser on Wednesday, Feb. 28, at The Como Restaurant, 2220 Pine Avenue Niagara Falls. The event is the continuation of an event that, for many years, was conducted by the Temple Beth Israel. In recent years, the leadership of the temple bestowed the fundraiser to Mount St. Mary's.

Construction crews earnestly began clearing the ground between Fairchild Place and Onondaga Street this week. The site is being prepped for the building of a three-story apartment complex to the south, and a six-unit townhome development to the north.

A fundraiser to benefit the Lewiston-Porter High School Summer of '69 Music Scholarship will take place at 6 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 17, at the Lewiston Event Center, 845 Cayuga St. The event will feature a performance by the Summer of '69 All-Star Band with special performances by Lewiston-Porter High School students.

The Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce will honor nine recipients from the northern Niagara area at its annual gala and awards dinner, Thursday, April 19, at the Niagara Falls Country Club in Lewiston. There, the chamber board of directors will present its 2018 Business and Citizen of the Year awards for the Lewiston, Youngstown, Ransomville and Sanborn communities.

It opened with remarks by resident Paulette Glasgow, a familiar face at past meetings who returned to this session following illness. Glasgow, a member of the Lewiston Taxpayers Accountability and Action Alliance, raised the issue of transparency as she proceeded to criticize the Town Board's lack of naming, but summarily approving a large number of town appointments, at its reorganization meeting earlier this month.

On Friday morning, the Lewiston Police Department led a joint active shooter drill on the Lewiston-Porter campus. The LPD teamed with Niagara County Sheriff's Office, U.S. Border Patrol and New York State Police, in conjunction with local fire and EMS companies. Access to the schools was restricted during the duration of the event.

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston on Tuesday voted in favor of an expansion to Hibbard's Original Frozen Custard. However, they tabled a request to allow the almost 80-year-old business to add a concrete pad in the right-of-way.

Executive Director Sonia Clark has announced a casting call for a new musical production of "The Odyssey" will take place from 6-9 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28, at The Kavinoky Theatre on the D'Youville Campus. It's expected the show will feature more than 100 people.

It was a relatively normal day for Buffalo resident Kenneth Lidge as he was nearing the Niagara Falls Airport as a passenger on an Allegiant Airlines flight coming from Tampa to Niagara Falls. Lidge was relaxing in his seat as he returned to Western New York from a cruise.

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston presented donations to Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation (Washuta Memorial) and Lewiston Police Department during the club's December dinner meeting. Proceeds for these donations were raised though the club's annual clambake, which is held in early June at Kiwanis Park.

Prior to Christmas, DiMino Tops Lewiston partnered with Niagara Frontier Publications to sponsor the annual holiday coloring contest. The supermarket displayed each child entrant's work in the foyer and then donated gifts to the winning posters.

The Neptune Water Ski Club held their annual New Year's Day event in the Niagara River at Lewiston. They had to break ice out of the boat launch to get the ski boat in the water, and then had to ski around the ice flows in the river.

At the recent Niagara County Farm Bureau luncheon, President Jim Bittner presented New York State Sen. Rob Ortt, Assemblyman Mike Norris and Assemblyman Angelo Morinello with the Circle of Friends Award. This honor is given to legislators whose votes reflect New York Farm Bureau's priorities.

The annual Youngstown/Town of Porter Community Holiday Baskets project has been declared a great success this year. Scores of volunteers worked a village-townwide collection campaign from Dec. 11-16 at the Red Brick Village Center gym. Through the efforts and the donations of many, 50 families received food boxes, and over 90 children received clothing and toy items.

The Kiwanis Club of Lewiston recently presented the Mount St. Mary's Hospital Foundation with a check for $5,000. The funds were from the club's annual clambake, which is dedicated to long-time Kiwanian Steve Washuta and the Steve Washuta Cardiac Center at Mount St. Mary's Hospital.

The First Presbyterian Church of Lewiston will open its doors on Christmas Eve to all members of the Greater Niagara Community. The church, established on Jan. 20, 1817, is the oldest in the Village of Lewiston and celebrated its 200th anniversary this year.

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston voted Monday to approve a change to the municipal sign code. Intent on helping people spot local businesses from the street, the board voted unanimously to modify the projecting sign size from two square feet up to a maximum of six square feet.
