Patriots Day Weekend launches Old Fort Niagara's re-enactment season with a salute to veterans and patriotism on April 22-23. The weekend's family-friendly, educational and interactive activities will enlighten visitors about the battles of Lexington and Concord that began April 19, 1775, and started the American Revolution.

As spring budget discussions occupy the mindset of both the Village of Lewiston and the Lewiston-Porter Board of Education, with the Town of Lewiston this week, it led off on quality of life matters - namely disturbing, offensive flyers appearing on driveways of residents in the village and town.

Trustees in the Village of Lewiston have met twice with Deputy Treasurer Edward Walker, and are finalizing a budget proposal for the 2017-18 fiscal year. As it stands now, the property tax rate is set to increase 8 cents, from $7.38 per $1,000 of assessed valuation to $7.46.

Bring your dog and a donation of at least $10 to Fort Niagara State Park (Main Street in Youngstown; south entrance, Shelter 1A) at 3 p.m. Saturday, April 15, for a dog "Easter Egg Hunt for a Cure." Each dog will search for treat-filled eggs, with some containing prizes.

A demolition crew is wasting no time tearing down the former Fairchild Manor Nursing Home site on Onondaga Street in Lewiston. An entire wing was removed on Monday, and enormous piles of metal, concrete, wood and brick were sorted and removed on Tuesday.

Old Fort Niagara field musicians will participate in the Youngstown St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday, March 18, starting at noon, in the village. The musicians will play the fifes and drums and wear, for the first time, the waistcoats sewn by Niagara University students during the fall 2016 semester.

Late last year while collecting for Cans For Food, Lewiston resident Angelo Sarkees found a jar full of pennies. Instead of just cashing in the pennies, he decided to have a contest to raise some more money for the local food pantries.

The Lewiston Community Lions hosted two local organizations during the club's February dinner meeting. Representing their organizations were Dr. Sam Pappalardo of Camp Hope, and Nancy Smith of the Dale Association. Both organizations received a monetary donation from the Lewiston Community Lions in support of their work within the community.
