The Historical Association of Lewiston's next program, "The Meaning and Significance of the Erie Canal after 200 years," will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 26, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida St. This presentation will be by Dr. John Montague of the Buffalo Maritime Center.

Acting Erie County District Attorney Michael J. Keane announced Abel Gebrehawaria, 24, of Buffalo, was sentenced this morning before State Supreme Court Justice M. William Boller. He received a determinate sentence of five years in prison followed by five years of post-release supervision.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced law enforcement agencies throughout New York will increase patrols from Sept. 9-14 to target speeding, which is one of the most dangerous driving offenses. Speed Awareness Week is a high-visibility enforcement campaign, supported by funding from the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee to stop speeding and prevent avoidable crashes caused by unsafe speed.

The Smithsonian's National Museum of American History will accept a costume worn by actress Mariska Hargitay in her role as Capt. Olivia Benson in "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" during a Sept. 9 ceremony. The department of indigenous studies at the University at Buffalo continues to build upon the momentum of its initial Mellon Foundation grant funding, obtained in 2020. With the addition of a minor in indigenous studies in 2022, and the official launch of the new department of indigenous studies in 2023, indigenous studies at UB has reached another milestone with the implementation of a new major this fall.

Lockport-Niagara Hospice will hold its annual Mighty Niagara Half Marathon and Hospice Dash 5K on Oct. 5. The half-marathon starts at Artpark State Park in Lewiston, while the 5K starts at Porter-on-the-Lake Park. Both races finish at Porter-on-the-Lake Park.

Amelia Faddoul was crowned Peach Queen on Sunday night at the close of the 66th annual Niagara County Peach Festival. The 20-year-old Niagara Falls resident is a Niagara University junior. With the win, she earns a $4,000 scholarship from the Kiwanis Club of Lewiston.
