From April 20-24, a coordinated spring aggressive driving enforcement initiative was conducted throughout Niagara County. The operation, undertaken in partnership with the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee’s “No Empty Chair” campaign, brought together multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Falls Police Department, North Tonawanda Police Department, New York State Police, New York State Park Police, Lockport Police Department, Middleport Police Department, Lewiston Police Department, Town of Niagara Police Department, Youngstown Police Department, and the Somerset Police Department.

This collaborative effort reflects a unified commitment among local and state agencies to address dangerous driving behaviors and improve roadway safety through a highly visible and proactive enforcement presence. The initiative focused on identifying and addressing violations commonly associated with aggressive driving, including speeding, unsafe lane changes, failure to yield the right-of-way, and other hazardous behaviors that place motorists and pedestrians at risk.

Throughout the five-day operation, patrol units placed a strong emphasis on both enforcement and public engagement. Deputies and officers conducted more than 900 traffic stops, and issued over 950 traffic tickets for a variety of violations. In addition, more than 80 individuals were taken into custody for traffic-related offenses, including driving while intoxicated, reckless driving, aggravated unlicensed operation, and speed contests, among others.

These enforcement actions serve not only to hold violators accountable, but also to deter future unsafe driving practices.

The initiative is part of a broader, ongoing strategy aimed at reducing traffic collisions, injuries and fatalities across Niagara County. By combining enforcement with public awareness efforts, participating agencies seek to reinforce the importance of responsible driving and the consequences associated with dangerous behavior behind the wheel.

Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti emphasized the importance of coordinated enforcement efforts, stating, “Initiatives like this demonstrate what can be accomplished when law enforcement agencies work together toward a common goal. Aggressive driving continues to be a significant factor in preventable crashes, and our focus remains on reducing those risks through consistent enforcement and public awareness. Motorists should recognize that these efforts are not limited to a single campaign – they are part of our ongoing commitment to protecting everyone who travels on our roadways.”

Niagara County Traffic Safety Board Chairman and Town of Niagara Police Chief Craig Guiliani said, “Through coordinated enforcement, public education and community engagement, we not only try to reduce dangerous behaviors on our roads but also reinforce a collective commitment to saving lives. This kind of unified effort demonstrates that traffic safety is everyone’s responsibility – and together, we continue to make our streets safer. I applaud the law enforcement men and women of this county who put their own lives at risk every day to ensure our safety.”

Participating agencies will continue working together to promote safe driving practices, reduce dangerous behaviors, and enhance roadway safety throughout Niagara County.
