As veterans and members of their families, led by a bagpiper, walked through school hallways, starting at the Veronica Connor Middle School library and ending at the Grand Viking Theater on the morning of Nov. 10, students and staff applauded and waved small flags.

Richard Spinelli, Veronica Connor Middle School assistant principal, said this was the first time that he had experienced a veterans parade at school.

“I’ve never done an event like this,” he said. “I’m new to the district this year. When I first started over the summer, I was told this is a big event, to prepare for it early. I was told about the veterans who come in and the way in which the students and staff celebrate and thank them. I thought it was such a cool opportunity, not just for the veterans, but for kids.”

At the Grand Viking Theater, the veterans were treated to a musical performance featuring the high school’s concert choir and wind ensemble.

Grand Island High School Principal Hillary Kretz-Harvey said, “We are proud to honor you for your past and current service, but also for the example that you continue to set for our students: dedication, integrity, resilience, and love of country. These are the same values that we try to instill in our young people each and every day. Thank you for being here; thank you for your service; thank you to your families for the sacrifices that they have made; and thank you for reminding us what it means to serve something greater than ourselves.”

“I think it’s a special way, not just to teach kids facts and dates, but also how we recognize, appreciate and celebrate those who served our country and continue to do so,” Spinelli said. “It's really fun. Students and staff are excited about it. We have teachers who have served, who are marching in the parade. We’re excited to see them out there. It just speaks volumes about what our district represents.”
