Former Niagara County Legislature Chairwoman Rebecca J. “Becky” Wydysh announced Thursday that she is running for the New York State Assembly in the 145th District. Wydysh’s announcement comes the day after current Assemblyman Angelo Morinello announced he will not seek reelection in 2026.
Wydysh, the first woman to serve as chairman of the Niagara County Legislature, said affordability will be a central focus of her campaign, citing rising costs for groceries, gas and energy that are impacting families and seniors across Western New York.
“Families are being squeezed, especially by rising energy costs,” Wydysh said. “We need leaders in Albany who understand that affordability isn’t political – it’s personal.”
First elected to the Niagara County Legislature in 2015, Wydysh represented the 2nd District, which includes parts of Wheatfield and the Town and Village of Lewiston. She became chairwoman in January 2020 and led the county’s response during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Wydysh has also been a leading voice in opposing state actions she says negatively affect Niagara County, including successfully preventing New York City from housing illegal migrants in the county.
In addition to her legislative service, Wydysh has worked for 28 years in the Niagara County Courthouse and currently serves as deputy commissioner of jurors with the New York State Unified Court System. She has also led efforts to combat the opioid crisis as chairman of Niagara County’s Opioid Task Force.
Wydysh has received the support of Morinello and New York State Sen. Rob Ortt.
Becky lives in the Village of Lewiston with her husband, Peter, and has two grown children.
