DeGlopper expansion committee debuts new website

New memorial fundraising campaign announced

Earlier this summer, the Charles N. DeGlopper expansion committee released its updated website and launched a new fundraising campaign for the DeGlopper Memorial located at the intersection of Grand Island Boulevard and Baseline Road. Accessed at www.degloppermemorial.org, the revamped, user-friendly site delves further into the story of Grand Island’s World War II Medal of Honor recipient.

“I encourage you to take a few minutes to visit the website and explore it,” said Elsie Martino, committee secretary. Visitors will discover the rich details into the DeGlopper legacy – the who, what, when, where why and how of his life. “Our goal was not simply to create a website, but to tell the story of the DeGlopper Memorial and preserve its history for future generations.”

Martino said the site not only tells the story of this war hero, but also the Island community and the individuals behind the establishment of the memorial over the years. Titled the “Charles N. DeGlopper Memorial,” it serves as, “A place of remembrance honoring Private First Class Charles Neilans DeGlopper, whose sacrifice at LaFiere, Normandy, France during World War II helped establish the first bridgehead over the Merderet River.”

The Island landmark was formally dedicated by the Grand Island community on Memorial Day 2024.

According to Martino, “The website provides visitors with a clear understanding of the memorial itself (and) recognizes the many individuals and organizations whose generosity made the project possible.”

Found on the site are such informational titles as DeGlopper’s biography, Normandy, plus details on the timeline of the memorial, plus its community partners and supporters who made it all possible.

Island organizations acknowledged include the Grand Island American Legion, Island VFW Post 9249, the VFW Auxiliary and a number of individuals and businesses.

“The website is intended to serve as a lasting historical record of the memorial; we have worked hard to ensure that the information presented is accurate and complete,” Martino said.

“This website (also) represents the combined efforts of many people who have contributed their time, talents and support over the years. …

“We hope this website will continue to educate, inspire and honor Charles DeGlopper and all those commemorated at the memorial for many years to come.”

Martino also announced a new price schedule for the personalized granite stones and pavers available to individuals and organizations who wish to become a lasting part of the DeGlopper Memorial.

“Join us in commemorating the valor and sacrifice of our brave servicemen and servicewomen at the DeGlopper Memorial,” she said.

Martino said the 12-by-12-inch granite stones are priced at $1,100, with pavers available in two size categories. Prices are $175 each for the 4-by-8-inch sized pavers and $400 for the 8-by-8-inch version.

“Whether you wish to honor a cherished loved one or express gratitude to those who have served our country, these pavers and granite stones serve as timeless tributes,” Martino said.

In addition, supporters are welcome to become part of the Memorial’s Wall of Honor for a $100 contribution. Applications are found on the website, with instructions for submitting documentation.

“You can also request the name of an honorably discharged Grand Island veteran to be inscribed on the prestigious Wall of Honor,” Martino said.
