Niagara University press release
Now in its 10th year, “Living in Light: The Art of Healing” showcases artwork reflecting the journeys, experiences, hopes, and dreams of domestic violence survivors.
Presented by Niagara University’s office of violence prevention & education and its community partners in observance of Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the event will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 6. The schedule includes:
√ 4:30 p.m.: Event begins / art exhibit open
√ 5 p.m.: Brief formal program
√ 6:30 p.m.: Event concludes
First held in 2016, the initiative was cofounded and continues to be organized by Dr. Dana Radatz, professor of criminology and criminal justice, and director of the graduate program in criminal justice administration; and Dr. Jennifer Beebe, professor in the clinical mental health counseling program.
“For 10 years, ‘Living in Light’ has created a space where survivors’ voices and experiences are seen, heard and honored through art,” Beebe said. “This anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the progress we have made while recognizing that our work is not finished. By continuing to raise awareness, educate our campus and community, and connect individuals with support and resources, we can help create a culture where survivors feel supported and where everyone understands the role they can play in preventing dating and domestic violence.”
Radatz noted the strong community involvement that sustains the program: “It’s wonderful to be celebrating the 10th year of the ‘Living in Light’ event. The annual event represents the efforts of Niagara University and its collaboration with seven community partners that work to address domestic violence in Niagara County. The milestone anniversary reflects our community’s investment in prevention and education efforts, and that we are most successful when we work together.”
The event brings together multiple local partner organizations, including:
√ Castellani Art Museum
√ Child Advocacy Center of Niagara
√ Niagara County Sheriff’s Office victim assistance unit & domestic violence intervention program
√ Niagara County Strive
√ Pinnacle Community Services
√ Seven Dancers Coalition
√ YWCA of the Niagara Frontier
“Niagara University’s Catholic and Vincentian mission calls us to be a light for others, and ‘Living in Light’ directly embodies that commitment,” said the Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., president. “We remain dedicated to fostering a community centered on human dignity, and I am deeply grateful to the students, faculty, staff and partners whose dedication continues to effect meaningful change.
