National publication spends 6 days inside Niagara Falls homeless shelter documenting how golf is helping men rebuild their lives
Niagara Gospel Mission press release
Niagara Gospel Mission is receiving national attention as GOLF Magazine and GOLF.com release an in-depth feature highlighting the agency’s unconventional use of golf to help men overcome homelessness, addiction, and destructive patterns of life.
The feature, written by GOLF.com reporter Nick Piastowski, includes a 3,600-word article and a documentary-style video lasting more than 20 minutes. In July, Piastowski spent six days living alongside the men at Niagara Gospel Mission, experiencing their daily routines, hearing their personal stories, and discovering how the game of golf has become a tool for transformation.
At the center of the story is the Niagara Gospel Country Club, a leadership and discipleship program developed by Niagara Gospel Mission that uses golf to teach biblical principles of discipline, integrity, accountability, humility and brotherhood. The feature follows four men whose lives have been impacted by NGM and its unique approach to recovery.
"Most people don't associate golf with a homeless shelter, and that's exactly what makes this story so interesting," said the Rev. John Cooper Jr., NGM executive director. "We're not trying to create professional golfers. We're trying to develop men who take responsibility for their lives, lead with integrity, and understand that lasting transformation begins with the Gospel of Jesus Christ."
Unlike traditional recreational programs, the Niagara Gospel Country Club combines golf instruction with intentional leadership development. Participants learn practical skills on the driving range, putting green and golf course, while studying biblical principles that apply to their daily lives. The program also creates opportunities for men to build relationships with community leaders, business professionals, and members of the local golf community.
"Golf has an incredible way of exposing a man's character," Cooper said. "You can't control every bounce of the ball, but you can control how you respond. You learn patience, humility, discipline, and how to handle adversity. Those lessons don't end when you leave the golf course. They follow you into your relationships, your employment, and your responsibilities as a man."
The national feature also brings attention to NGM's broader approach to homelessness. Rather than focusing exclusively on providing temporary shelter, the agency operates emergency shelter, long-term residential recovery, and transitional housing programs designed to address the underlying challenges that contribute to homelessness.
For Cooper, the significance of the GOLF Magazine story extends beyond national publicity.
"What's most exciting to me isn't that GOLF Magazine came to Niagara Falls. It's that they came to tell the stories of four men whose lives matter," he said. "These are men who have experienced tremendous hardship, but their stories aren't finished. Our hope is that people watching this documentary will see that homelessness doesn't have to be the end of someone's story."
NGM hopes the national exposure will encourage other organizations, churches and communities to consider innovative approaches to helping people overcome homelessness while introducing the broader golf community to the transformative work taking place in Niagara Falls.
