Niagara History Center press release

The Niagara History Center in Lockport will hold a “Free Family Night” from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22. This month’s theme is “One Room School Houses.”

Free pizza, water and cookies will be available before the program begins at 6:15 p.m. Karen Sherwood, a retired Lockport elementary school educator will portray a teacher from 150 years ago. Families will find out what school was like in 1876, including what students ate for lunch and what they did at recess. Artifacts from one room school houses will be there for viewing – and a few can be handled. Children can try writing with a stylus and homemade ink in an inkwell.

Although the event is free, preregistration is required by calling the History Center at 716-434-7433 or emailing info@niagarahistory.org. Include one adult’s name and contact number, how many adults and children will attend, and the ages of the kids. These activities are recommended for children ages 5 and up and are not appropriate for babies or preschoolers.

The “Free Family Nights” are funded through a grant from the Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union.
