FASNY highlights simple steps to help prevent lithium-ion battery fires

As Fire Prevention Week gets underway, the Firefighters Association of the State of New York (FASNY) is reminding New Yorkers that everyday charging habits can play an important role in preventing lithium-ion battery fires. This year’s Fire Prevention Week theme, “Safe Charging Is a Charge into Fire Safety,” encourages consumers to make smart choices every time they plug in a device.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices New Yorkers use every day, from phones and laptops to e-bikes, scooters and power tools. But as their use has grown, so too has the risk of dangerous battery fires. Since 2022, more than 800 lithium-ion battery fires have been reported in New York City alone, resulting in 30 deaths and more than 400 injuries.

“Fire prevention often comes down to simple decisions we make every day,” FASNY President Donald Farrell said. “Taking a few extra precautions when charging a phone, e-bike or other battery-powered device can help prevent a fire before it starts. We encourage all New Yorkers to make safe charging part of their everyday routine.”

FASNY recommends the following safe-charging practices:

•Use the right charger: Always use the cord and charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.

•Charge on a hard surface: Avoid charging devices on beds, couches, pillows or other soft surfaces that can trap heat and block airflow.

•Pay attention to warning signs: Stop using a device if it becomes unusually hot, swells, smells strange, leaks, smokes or makes popping or hissing sounds. A damaged battery can overheat and start a fire.

•Unplug when fully charged: Once a device reaches a full charge, unplug it to reduce heat and stress on the battery.

•Charge larger devices outside whenever possible: E-bikes, scooters and power tools contain larger batteries that store more energy. When possible, charge these devices outdoors and never block exits while charging.

FASNY also reminds New Yorkers that safe charging is just one part of a comprehensive home fire safety plan. Working smoke alarms and a home fire escape plan can make a life-saving difference during an emergency.

“Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity for all of us to take a closer look at the small habits that can make a major difference,” Farrell said. “We want New Yorkers to enjoy the convenience of their everyday technology while understanding how to use and charge these devices safely.”
