The cities of Tonawanda and North Tonawanda are proud to announce a season-long celebration of the bicentennial of the Erie Canal, which first opened Oct. 26, 1825. As the western gateway to the Erie Canal and home to the renowned Gateway Harbor Park, our communities are coming together to commemorate this historic milestone with a series of exciting events from June through October.
Residents and visitors alike are invited to participate in a variety of activities that celebrate the canal's rich history and vibrant role in our region. Planned events include history cruises, Warrior Walks, a boat parade, Flotsam River Circus, special themed events, and more.
The Tonawandas and a coalition of local organizations – including the Historical Society of the Tonawandas, the Tonawanda History Museum, both cities’ mayor’s offices and parks and recreation departments, the Chamber of Commerce of the Tonawandas, The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum, and other community partners – have joined forces to offer a dynamic lineup of educational and recreational opportunities. These events will honor the Erie Canal’s legacy while encouraging residents and visitors to explore its banks and experience the waterway firsthand.
To kick off the celebration, join us for “Tales from the Canal” from 6-9 p.m. June 21 at the Tonawanda Pavilion in Gateway. This special evening will transport guests back in time with authentic canal music and captivating guest speakers who will share fascinating stories of the canal’s history.
