On Friday, the New York State Department of Transportation issued a statement from Region 5 Director Eric Meka pertaining to Interstate 190 over Niagara Falls Boulevard (State Route 62) in the City of Niagara Falls.

“A detailed inspection of the bridge carrying southbound Interstate 190 over Niagara Falls Boulevard (State Route 62) in the City of Niagara Falls has revealed significant damage to the steel girders caused when a truck carrying a shipping container struck the underside of the overpass on Thursday morning. The collision marked the second time in recent months that the bridge was struck by a commercial vehicle and has further damaged the structure.

“As a result, I-190 southbound in the vicinity of the bridge will remain closed until further notice as the New York State Department of Transportation expedites the design of a repair that will allow for a partial reopening of the bridge.

“Motorists should be prepared for delays and seek alternate routes if possible. Otherwise, drivers should continue to follow the posted detour at Exit 22, utilizing Connecting Road to reenter I-190 southbound after crossing the Niagara Falls Boulevard intersection.

“NYSDOT appreciates the public’s patience as we undertake this important work, and will keep the community apprised of further developments.”
