The repairs along the I-190 southbound bridge crossing over Niagara Falls Boulevard in Niagara Falls are expected to be completed in the spring, according to New York State Department of Transportation representative Ryan Whalen.
The bridge sustained damage twice in 2025, once during the summer where a strike of the bridge went unreported, and again in late November when a commercial truck hauling a shipment container struck the underside of the bridge. The bridge was closed for two weeks and reopened Dec. 6.
Currently, the bridge has one lane open for traffic. At 9 p.m. Jan. 15, the bridge was closed for four hours, and traffic was rerouted around the bridge, while concrete barriers were shifted to place traffic in the second lane.
“For people who are driving on the road, it’s not really going to be much different for them since Dec. 6 when it reopened. It’s basically just a little more room, which will help with the (snow) plows,” Whalen said.
More repairs are anticipated to take place, including one more night shutdown of the I-190 bridge. There will be other night work under the bridge on Niagara Falls Boulevard taking place. All of this should be completed by the end of February.
“(There will be night work) once more for the I-190 and then two or three nights for Niagara Falls Boulevard. We should never be fully closed on Niagara Falls Boulevard,” Whalen said.
The DOT’s goal is to get the bridge back to full operation, Whalen said.
Accountability for the strike is being worked out. Whalen was unable to speak further on specifics.
“There is a process to pursue,” he said.
