Niagara County Sheriff's Office press release
Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced law enforcement agencies throughout Niagara County will participate in a coordinated statewide initiative in recognition of the well-known “420 Drug Day” on April 20. This campaign is focused on raising awareness of the dangers of drug-impaired driving and enhancing roadway safety.
As part of this effort to deter impaired driving, prevent injuries, and save lives, law enforcement officers across New York will increase patrols and enforcement as part of the STOP-DWI high-visibility engagement campaign.
The initiative will take place throughout 4/20, encompassing the day-long observance. During this period, the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, along with local law enforcement agencies countywide, will conduct targeted enforcement efforts to reduce drug and alcohol-impaired driving and related crashes, injuries and fatalities.
This campaign places particular emphasis on the dangers of drug-impaired driving, including impairment caused by cannabis and other substances. With the continued legalization and increased accessibility of cannabis products, public education and enforcement remain critical to ensuring that drivers understand that impairment – regardless of the source – poses a serious risk to roadway safety.
The STOP-DWI high-visibility engagement campaign is one of several statewide enforcement initiatives supported by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. Similar campaigns are conducted throughout the year during high-risk travel periods, including the Super Bowl, St. Patrick’s Day, Memorial Day weekend, Independence Day weekend, Labor Day weekend, Halloween, Thanksgiving, and the holiday season.
STOP-DWI enforcement efforts across New York have contributed to significant reductions in alcohol- and drug-related traffic fatalities. However, impaired driving continues to be a leading cause of preventable deaths.
Highly visible and well-publicized enforcement initiatives, such as this campaign, are designed to further deter impaired driving and promote safer roadways for all.
