This year, Project HOPE volunteers lent a hand to 87-year-old Jerry Dickerson and wife, Pat, on 3214 Lockport Road, Wheatfield. Painters Plus and team supplied the paint, labor, materials, and painted the entire exterior of the home free of charge.

Niagara County Legislators Chris Robins and Chris McKimmie announced Niagara County will host a paint collection event from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at Veterans' Memorial Park in the Town of Niagara. Any latex- or oil-based paint in its original container can be accepted at no cost. Residents and businesses are allowed to bring up to 75 gallons of paint to the event.

For the first time ever, visitor spending in Niagara County has exceeded the billion-dollar mark, reaching an impressive $1.082 billion. This represents an 11.7% increase over 2022, underscoring the county's growing appeal as a premier travel destination.

At 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, the Wheatfield Veterans Committee will honor all Gold Star Mothers for the dedication of a bronze statue placed on the current Veterans Memorial site, 2800 Church Road. This is a no-charge ceremony, and all are welcome. There is ample parking and facilities.

The New York Power Authority and New York State Canal Corp. unveiled the final installation of an iconic lighting program in Western New York. Spanning the Erie Canal between the City of Tonawanda and City of North Tonawanda in Niagara County, the CSX Railroad crossing is now illuminated nightly with LED lighting as a focal point over the historic waterway.

Empire State Development (ESD) announced the completion of 110 Sweeney Street, a new mixed-use development on the waterfront in the City of North Tonawanda. The project consists of a new, two-story 21,000-square-feet building that includes 15 residential units, two commercials spaces, and a newly opened ground-floor restaurant, District 37 Kitchen and Tap House.

When the United States entered World War 1 in 1917, a young man of 23, George Vaughn Seibold, volunteered requesting assignment in aviation. The United States was short of airplanes; and having no air force, George was sent to Canada for training with British aviators. George was then sent to England and was assigned to Royal Flying Corps, 148th Aero Squadron.

At its May meeting, the SUNY Niagara board of trustees unanimously approved a $48 million operating budget proposal for the coming fiscal year. Under the spending plan, tuition would stay at the current cost of $2,568 per semester for New York state residents. The college's student fee schedule would also remain unchanged.

Organizers of "Thursdays on the Water" announced their 2024 lineup at a recent press conference. Shows run from 5-10 p.m. at Gratwick Park, 1300 River Road, North Tonawanda. Doors open at 5 p.m. Opening bands start around 6 p.m. Each headlining band takes the stage from 8:30-10 p.m.

On Saturday, the Wheatfield Lions Club officially dedicated the new fishing deck and improvements to the pond at our Five Senses Park, and accessible trails made possible with the efforts of many people both within our organization - but also thanks to Niagara Greenway funds. Dedicated to past club President Lion Walter Garrow, this amazing project was created, promoted and chaired by Lion Walt with great care and attention.

The Heritage Christian Services Homes with Heart campaign has received tremendous support from the community since going public last year, and for its overall goal of $9.1 million. A ribbon-cutting event took place Wednesday at the home on Hoover Road in celebration of the campaign's progress of purchasing or rebuilding existing homes to support people in all phases of their lives.

Wegmans is celebrating the 40th anniversary of its employee scholarship program. Since it began in 1984, more than 46,500 Wegmans employees have been awarded scholarships totaling $145 million. This year, approximately 1,500 new recipients were awarded scholarships. The company expects to pay out more than $6.5 million in tuition assistance to both new and returning scholarship recipients during the 2024-25 school year.

A ceremony was held Wednesday reopening the main Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station gate on Lockport Road following an 18-month reconstruction period. This $10.6 million project is designed to increase the safety of more than 3,000 base personnel and the security of over $1 billion in assigned federal assets.

SUNY Niagara is celebrating a historic achievement for its surgical technology program. The graduating Class of 2024 marks a first in the program's history, with all 15 students earning a passing grade on the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA) certified surgical technologist (CST) exam, giving the cohort a 100% pass rate.

The Niagara USA 250th committee, created to coordinate local celebrations, to garner interest in Niagara County's rich history, and to strengthen Niagara County's status as a heritage tourism destination for our nation's 250th birthday in 2026, has received $7,500 from the Niagara County Legislature to fund initial planning activities.
