November is National Hospice and Palliative Care Month and a time to raise awareness about the specialized, expert care Niagara Hospice provides in Niagara County. The nonprofit organization has provided hospice care to over 30,000 individuals and their families since 1988. In recognizing the month, the nonprofit organization is happy to announce plans for its longest-running fundraiser, "Cocktails & Cash."

The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens and the Niagara Frontier Orchid Society will host their popular biannual orchid show from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 9. The show will feature hundreds of exotic and award-winning orchids, expert orchid growers and sellers, and other orchid vendors.

The Breast Cancer Network of WNY (BCN) will host its annual open house from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 23, at its facility inside the United Way Building at 742 Delaware Ave. The event will focus on BCN's programs, breast cancer awareness, and early detection. Last year, New York's "Slow Down/Move Over" requirement expanded to include disabled vehicles that are parked on the shoulder of a controlled access highway or parkway, requiring drivers to exercise caution when approaching a disabled vehicle.

Nearly 400 people from across Western New York and beyond gathered Saturday at Niagara Falls High School for the 12th annual Veterans Appreciation Day, hosted by Hands Healing Heroes. Veterans and their families - some traveling more than two hours to attend - were treated to an afternoon of live entertainment, raffles, entrance gifts, and a hearty home-cooked meal - all free of charge, including haircuts and massages for the veterans.

As the Niagara History Center commemorates the bicentennial of the Erie Canal, a new temporary exhibit has gone up in the Changing Exhibit Room in the Outwater House at 215 Niagara St., Lockport. This exhibit, titled "The Haudenosaunee and the Erie Canal: Dispossession and Displacement," shows how the idea and construction of the Erie Canal impacted the Indigenous people of New York.
