Grand Island celebrates Chanukah, the festival of lights

The world, Rabbi Mendel Gurary said, is full of darkness. Speaking at the gazebo in the Grand Island Town Commons on Dec. 16 as part of a local Chanukah celebration, Gurary, who organized the event with Rabbi Yosef Chartonow of Chabad of Buffalo, said, "The message of Chanukah is the message of light. There's a lot of darkness in the world, especially this year. We know what happened in Sydney."

Lewiston Town Board members on Monday approved a six-month moratorium on permits covering seasonal/special use activities in the zoning districts. The vote followed a contentious, nearly 30-minute session where the board received a number of comments from speakers in defense of right-to-farm operations.

Santa arrived in Lewiston on Saturday morning, receiving a special escort from Lewiston No. 1 Fire Co. He began at Academy Park, paraded down Center Street, and situated himself in front of the Frontier House. There, he met with children, received Christmas lists, and took photos.

At Monday's Town Board meeting, Wheatfield Water and Sewer Department head Mark Clark gave the Town of Wheatfield an update on the municipality's efforts to test for lead in water. The testing has been mandated by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency following new changes in the lead and copper rule.
