If you haven’t taken a ride down Route 18 (Lake Road) to Porter on the Lake in a while, you will have a great surprise. Grant money has been spent on several upgrades to the infrastructure, and more are on the way.

As you drive down Deitz Road to the park, you will first notice the brand-new black fence that replaced the old, rusty metal one. You will also see two new EV dual vehicle chargers in the new nature trail parking lot. The chargers are from a NYSERDA grant, and the electric line and pole from National Grid – no cost to Porter.

You can then take a stroll on the nature trail, that includes workout equipment at different stations. There are also bird houses and a bridge built for two Eagle Scout projects. Bring your frisbees – there is a nine-hole frisbee golf course. You could just come down to the outdoor gym, the only one in Niagara County, and work out looking at Toronto.

Need a place to hold a party or wedding? There is a large, main pavilion with a new metal roof and ceiling with LED lighting for rent.

Then, take a walk down to the lake, with 330 feet of beach frontage, with new benches to watch the beautiful sunset.

The work is far from done: An LWRP grant is in the process of building a concrete, lighted pier for fishing at the end of Dietz Road. This would also include an L-shaped break walk to the east, that would save the beach from erosion and provide a natural habitat for bird and fish breeding. This project will make Porter on the Lake a safe harbor for boaters when a storm comes in unexpectedly.

The weather is still great, so come down and enjoy a great time outdoors!
