On Saturday, volunteers – namely from the Lewiston-Porter School District – joined Aquarium of Niagara staff at Fort Niagara State Park for the annual community beach cleanup along the shores of Lake Ontario. Roughly 70 volunteers removed 20 bags’ worth of trash, along with a multitude of large items and debris from the shoreline.
Conservation initiatives like the community beach cleanup are an important aspect of the Aquarium of Niagara’s mission to inspire people to make a difference for aquatic life.
Over the years, volunteers have helped remove more than 10,000 pounds of litter from local shorelines, protecting aquatic habitats from the negative impact of trash on important ecosystems.
This cleanup is part of the International Coastal Cleanup sponsored by the Ocean Conservancy and organized for New York state by the Northeast Chapter of the American Littoral Society.
