Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center announced Amanda Runkle, a registered nurse in the intensive care unit, is this year’s recipient of the Esther Werner & Helene Barter Scholarship awarded by the Medical Center Auxiliary.
A Niagara Falls resident, Runkle graduated from SUNY Niagara (formerly Niagara County Community College) in 2019 with an associate’s degree in nursing. She is working toward a bachelor’s in nursing from Empire State College, expecting to graduate in the fall. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in nursing education.
“Amanda is someone who will definitely make a difference at the medical center and in the community,” said Judy Shahin, chair of the Auxiliary scholarship committee. “The Auxiliary is pleased to assist her in meeting her educational goals.”
The scholarship, awarded annually since 1989, is given in memory of Werner, Memorial’s first social worker, and her sister, a long-time medical center volunteer.
