The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Buffalo District, would like to share an update on the progress of the Niagara Falls Storage Site (NFSS) project.

USACE awarded a $27.8 million task order on its single award task order contract (SATOC) to complete the design for remediation of the NFSS Interim Waste Containment Structure (IWCS). The completed 100% remedial design will detail the infrastructure and procedures required to safely remediate the IWCS (NFSS remedial action phases 2 and 3). The remedial design is scheduled to be completed in 2027, and the project will be ready to transition into the next phases of work pending availability of federal funding.

The NFSS phase 1 remedial effort, which includes remediation of site soils outside of the IWCS, is ongoing. Transportation of waste began the week of July 14, 2025. The waste is being loaded into lined and tarped intermodal containers, trucked to a rail transfer station in Buffalo, and finally, transported via rail to the Waste Control Specialists disposal facility in Andrews, Texas

Please note that the truck transportation route from NFSS to the interstate has still avoids the Lewiston-Porter School District and the Tuscarora Nation. USACE anticipates phase 1 fieldwork will be completed by the end of calendar year 2025. Phase 1 remediation progress and air monitoring infographics have been posted to the NFSS website and will be updated regularly.

The NFSS integrated technical office (ITO), located at the project site, will continue oversight of all remedial and design activities, and will continue to coordinate with first responders and other key stakeholders as the progress continues.

For regular updates on clean up progress, look for future news from the corps emails and visit the project website at https://www.lrd.usace.army.mil/Mission/Projects/Article/3612360/niagara-falls-storage-site/.
