Members of the Grand Island Town Board present a proclamation to members of the Grand Island Historical Society at Town Hall on Sept. 15 in honor of the 60th anniversary of the saving of River Lea. The historic building within Beaver Island State Park was saved from demolition when a group of concerned Grand Island residents convinced New York State Parks to use it as a museum and meeting place for Grand Island.

River Lea’s historic significance is tied to its original owner, Lewis F. Allen, uncle of President Grover Cleveland of Buffalo. Allen Street and Allentown were named after the Buffalo businessman.

In the intervening years, the Historical Society was formed and has been instrumental in the development of River Lea as a museum and interpretive center. (Photo by Karen Carr Keefe)
