Taste of Buffalo presented by Tops Friendly Markets returns to downtown Buffalo for its 43rd annual event from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, July 11, and from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 12. This year's festival features 42 restaurants and food trucks, four New York state wineries, live local music, and more along Delaware Avenue starting at Chippewa Street and continuing into Niagara Square.

Second proposed Grand Island school budget discussed at public hearing

At the June 8 public hearing on the second proposed school budget, held at Grand Island High School, the issues raised from the 17 community members who spoke included tax increases, the reserve fund, the opportunity for outside groups to use school facilities, messaging on social media, electric school buses, additional budget cuts in the event of a contingent budget, communication issues, the distance that buses travel to take children to special education programs, and financial pressures on the community.

The Erie County Department of Health (ECDOH) announced a resident tested positive for measles. This individual recently traveled to a country where measles cases are endemic - which means the infection has spread continuously in that population for a year or more. This is the first confirmed measles case in Erie County since 2018, when another travel-linked case was reported.

Grand Island: Town Board authorizes supervisor to purchase splash pad

The Grand Island Town Board at its June 1 meeting authorized Supervisor Peter Marston to sign a contract for the purchase of a splash pad from Vortex , a splash pad manufacturer, for $708,806.41. The vote was 3-1, with the dissenting vote coming from Councilman Dan Kilmer. Marston was listed as excused from the meeting.
Boy Scout protects ducks with Eagle Scout project

On a cool and sunny May 15, Charles Wright, a member of Boy Scout Troop 630, along with several assistants, went to Beaver Island State Park to install seven hen tubes and one wood duck box. The construction and installation of these structures was Charles' Eagle Scout project.

Grand Island Fire Co. responds to chlorine leak alarm

On Sunday, Grand Island Fire Co. dispatch was notified by Water Department personnel of a chlorine leak alarm at the Town of Grand Island Water Department's water tank and pumping station on Whitehaven Road. The GIFC responded to the facility to investigate the alarm.

The New York State Department of Transportation is advising motorists that there will be roving lane closures on Interstate 190 between the north Grand Island Bridge in Erie County and Upper Mountain Road in Niagara County from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 30, to facilitate bridge washing and sealing.

Islander Terrence Crowe remembered at town's Memorial Day ceremony

On June 7, 2005, Lt. Col. Terrence Crowe was killed by Iraqi insurgents in Tal Afar, Iraq. He was 44 years old at the time and was the only Islander to be killed in the Iraq war, also known as Operation Iraqi Freedom.

For the seventh year in a row, 7,300 flags will blanket the grounds of the Buffalo and Erie County Naval & Military Park throughout Memorial Day weekend to represent the average number of U.S. veterans who have lost their battle with PTSD per year, an average of 22 per day. Grand Island voters reject school budget, vehicle purchases in close vote

Grand Island voters voted down the proposed $81,685,805 school budget for 2026-27 on Tuesday. The vote was 1,352 against the budget, and 1,280 in favor. Voters also turned down proposition two: $672,000 for the purchase of vehicles. The vote was 1,334 against the proposition, and 1,280 in favor.
