National Grid will begin installing new smart meters to its more than 121,000 Buffalo-area customers, providing homeowners and business owners new ways to monitor their energy use and spending. The Buffalo installations, to begin later this month, are part of the company's plan to replace meters across upstate New York that are nearing their end of lifespan with modern smart meters.

Niagara Gospel Mission volunteers had a busy night before Thanksgiving - and even busier Thanksgiving day - preparing and handing out over 2,200 prepackaged Thanksgiving meals to people in the City of Niagara Falls, the Town of Niagara, and the City of North Tonawanda. Around 300 volunteers showed up and were assigned different roles for the "Feed the Falls" event.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced New Yorkers can now begin applying for heating assistance through the Home Energy Assistance Program to help defray the high cost of heating their homes during the winter. The program, known as HEAP, can provide up to $996 to eligible households, depending on how they heat their home.

With two weeks to go before Opening Day, Buffalo Waterfront released the full winter schedule for the Ice at Canalside, presented by Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield. This year will feature fun celebrations and programming with weekly "Festive Fridays" and "Special Event Saturdays." Favorites such as the ice bumper cars, curling, ice bikes and the ice train all return for the season, as the largest rink in New York opens for its 12th year.
