Citizens of Lewiston and members of the Tuscarora Nation gathered at dawn on Dec. 19 to commemorate a pivotal moment in their shared history. The ceremony, held at the Tuscarora Heroes Monument on Center Street, marked 211 years since Tuscarora natives saved dozens of Lewiston settlers during a British attack in the War of 1812.

Package theft increases during the holiday season. James encourages all New Yorkers to take steps to protect their deliveries and report instances of theft to local law enforcement.

Gov. Kathy Hochul announced State Police and local law enforcement agencies will participate in the national enforcement initiative on impaired driving this holiday season. The "Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over" campaign, an initiative funded by the Governor's Traffic Safety Committee, runs from Wednesday, Dec. 11, through Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2025.

On Wednesday, the board of directors for the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens announced the unanimous appointment of Erin Grajek as president and CEO, effective immediately. Grajek has served as interim president and CEO since the passing of Mark Mortenson in September. Prior to this role, she was the organization's COO beginning in 2021 and has held various progressive leadership positions at the Botanical Gardens since 2006.

The Niagara Gospel Mission had a busy Thanksgiving eve and Thanksgiving day, preparing and handing out over 2,200 prepackaged Thanksgiving meals to people in need in the City of Niagara Falls, the Town of Niagara, and the City of North Tonawanda. Around 300 volunteers showed up and were assigned different roles for the "Feed the Falls" event.

Come Jan. 1, water fees in the Village of Lewiston will increase. The board acted Monday to approve local laws raising the water improvements surcharge from $10 to $15 per billing cycle, and to up the water rate from $4.03 to $4.25 per 100 cubic feet of usage.
